The Position


 


The City of San Bruno is currently recruiting for a Police Commander to join the Police Department. This position is an FLSA exempt sworn safety classification and is distinguished from other management classifications in the department as it has prime responsibility for directing divisional activities including the management and planning of organizational and technical changes that impact the divisions, budget preparation, personnel matters and supervision. Specific division responsibility may vary as needed. Work is performed with significant independence under the direction of the Chief of Police.


 


 



The Department


 


The Police Department has a long standing tradition of small town service with a big city dedication to public safety. The Department consists of 46 sworn staff including the Police Chief, 1 Commander, 2 Lieutenants, 8 Sergeants, 34 Officers and 15-non-sworn staff. The Department has been focused on succession planning as the City prepares for anticipated retirements at the command staff level in the next few years.


 


The Department employs a Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving philosophy where members of the organization are encouraged to develop innovative strategies to improve police operations and serve the community.


 


The Department also provides a number of specialty assignments including: Bicycle Patrol, Canines, Corporals, Detectives, and a Motorcycle Traffic Division. In addition, the Department participates in the County's regional Narcotics Task Force and Tactical Response Team (SWAT/CNT).


 


 


Ideal Candidate


 


The ideal candidate is an approachable leader who facilitates open communications throughout the Department and the community. The successful candidate will have experience in police management and will demonstrate successful contributions to a team environment and a history of holding personnel accountable for performance. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work with the Chief of Police and the command staff to enhance police operations and ensure delivery of quality services to the community.


 


 


Minimum Qualifications


 


Education and Certifications:


The Police Commander requires graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree.



 


The Police Commander requires possession of, or current eligibility for, a Supervisory Certificate and Advanced Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).


 


Experience:


To be considered for this position, applicants must possess a minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience as a Police Officer with at least three (3) years as a Police Sergeant with the City of San Bruno or four (4) years as a Police Sergeant in a municipal law enforcement agency. For external candidates, perference will be given to those with experience at the rank of Lieutenant and above.


 


Special Requirements:


Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California drivers license.


 


 



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


 


Applicants should possess the knowlege of current police methods and procedures, including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, scientific investigation and identification techniques, and the control of juvenile delinquency; laws affecting apprehension, arrest, and prosecution of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies; rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and the preservation and presentation of evidence in criminal cases. Candidates are expected to have the ability to plan, organize, direct, and coordinate the activities of a division with the Police Department; communicate effectively in writing, orally, and with others to understand and convey information.
