The City of San Bruno is looking for a City Engineer/ Deputy Director of Public Services to join our full service organization. The Public Services department is comprised of the water, central garage, street & storm, wastewater, engineering and administration divisions. For those who are looking for a challenging work environment, the City of San Bruno offers an exciting opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects while helping to define a new vision for the City after the gas transmission line explosion and fire of September 2010. Based on recently developed master plans, the City is embarking on an ambitious capital improvements plan to upgrade its infrastructure including water mains, wells, pump stations and water tanks, as well as sewer mains and pump stations.
This position reports to the Director of Public Services and has direct interaction with executive staff and the City Council. The City Engineer/ Deputy Director of Public Services will oversee the engineering division will provide direct supervision to engineering staff.
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic individual who has the technical and management skills necessary to lead the engineering division of the Public Service Department. Technical experience in water, sewer, street, and large scale capital improvement projects is preferred, excellent written and oral communication skills, political sensitivity, and leadership abilities are also important as this position manages personnel, works with executive-level staff, and is responsible for the delivery and development of the capital improvement program for the City.
Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering.
Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience involving civil engineering with at least two (2) years in responsible management or supervisory-level position.
Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a professional civil engineer in the state of California.
Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California drivers license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Applicants should possess an exceptional combination of expertise in general public works administration, laws and regulations governing public works construction contracts, principles of supervision and management, legislative advocacy, and municipal finance and budgeting. In addition, the successful applicant must possess superior interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, and the ability to prepare and clearly present detailed reports on complex issues.
This position plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs the City’s engineering division, supervising professional and technical staff. The City Engineer/ Deputy Director of Public Services will responsible for the development of the capital improvement program including budgeting, planning and implementation, contract management, and the land development review process. Requirements include occasional evening/ weekend work hours.
