The Position


 


The City of San Bruno is looking for a Deputy Director of Public Services, Utilities and Operations to join our full service organization.  The Public Services department is comprised of the water, central garage, street & storm, wastewater, engineering and administration divisions. For those who are looking for a challenging work environment, the City of San Bruno offers an exciting opportunity to lead our maintenance division.


 


This position reports to the Director of Public Services and will oversee the Public Works Corporation Yard, which houses the water, waste water, central garage, and street & storm divisions. This position is responsible for supervising maintenance staff and subordinate personnel in the planning and implementation of division functions including water and wastewater operations, storm drainage systems, fleet and equipment maintenance, streets, sidewalks, signs, traffic signals and street lighting.


 


Ideal Candidate


 


The ideal candidate will be a dynamic individual who has the technical and management skills necessary to lead the maintenance division of the Public Service Department. Leadership, strong personnel management skills, and political sensitivity are important as this position manages staff, works with the City’s executive leadership, and is responsible for the repair and maintenance of the City’s infrastructure. Technical and maintenance experience in water, waste water, street, and storm drainage systems is preferred.


 


 


Minimum Qualifications


 


Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in public or business administration, management, civil engineering, construction management or related field.


 


Four (4) years of increasingly responsible management experience in public works or utilities operations and maintenance or a related field.


 


Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California’s drivers license.


 


Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in the state of California and/or advanced certification as a Water Distribution Operator are highly desirable.


 


 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


 


Applicants should possess an exceptional combination of expertise in general public works administration, laws and regulations governing public works construction contracts, principles of supervision and management, legislative advocacy, and municipal finance and budgeting. In addition, the successful application must possess superior interpersonal, written and oral communication skills and the ability to prepare and clearly present detailed reports on complex issues.


 


This position plans, organizes, coordinates and directs the City’s Utilities and Operations Division, supervising professional, technical, maintenance, and clerical staff. The Deputy Director of Utilities and Operations will be heavily involved in preventative maintenance planning and implementation, geographical information and maintenance management systems, water, waste water collection and treatment, storm water regulatory requirements, and contract management. Requirements include occasional evening/ weekend work hours.
