JOB ANNOUNCEMENT


 


THE COMMUNICATIONS CENTER:

The Sacramento Regional Fire/EMS communications Center is seeking applications and resumes from highly motivated, energetic persons to fill the position of Telecommunications Engineer.  Sacramento Regional Fire/EMS Communications Center dispatches fire and emergency medical services for the fire agencies in Sacramento City, Sacramento County, Elk Grove, Folsom, Galt and surrounding areas, with a mixed rural-suburban-urban population of 1.5 million and approximately 1000 square mile area.  Approximately 160,000 calls are dispatched per year.  A Joint Powers Authority with members representing City of Sacramento, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, Cosumnes Community Services District and the City of Folsom governs the Communications Center via an on-site Chief Executive Director.

 

 


The Communications Center, located in east Sacramento County, was remodeled in 1995 and administration offices, technology support work areas, a computer room, kitchen, shower and rest room facilities, as well as a secure dispatch area comprise the 6,000 square feet of available space. The dispatch floor is equipped with a PRC Cobol CAD System, Positron Power 911 phone system and an 800 megahertz region-wide radio system.  Authorized staffing includes 30 dispatchers and seven dispatch supervisors supported by three managerial positions, three administrative positions, and five technical support positions for a total of 47 positions.


 


POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Technical Systems Manager, the Telecommunications Engineer is responsible for supporting voice and data communications systems for Sacramento Regional Fire/Emergency Medical Services Communications Center (SRFECC).


 


This is a non-exempt position under the guidelines of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and is not represented by the employee bargaining unit. 


 


QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form; analyze telecommunications system malfunctions and restore system to service; test and repair/replace defective circuits and parts; maintain and make repairs to power supplies, battery charges, battery supplies for portable equipment; operate power hand tools in the installation of mobile radios, base and control and repeater stations; coordinate, monitor and inspect equipment installation to insure compliance with specifications and regulations; maintain service, inventory records; assist in development, planning and implementation of new telecommunications systems; develop and provide support of VoIP network infrastructure; function as subject matter expert for voice, VoIP and signaling; and other duties as assigned.


 


EDUCATION:

Any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain this would be:


 


A Bachelor of Science Degree in engineering, computer science, management information systems, or a related field is required.  Work experience may be substituted at management’s discretion.  Other recognized telecommunication system certification programs may be accepted.

 




EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of three years full time employment experience working with radio, telecommunications and VoIP.


 


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: 

The annual salary for this position is $78,828 - $95,808. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Employees will be members in the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) with the appropriate pension formula in accordance with the 2012 Public Employees Pension Reform Act.  All employees will be provided excellent health, vision, and dental benefits.
