Education and Experience


The ideal candidate is an experienced and visionary transportation professional with significant leadership experience in a complex public organization. This candidate will have a high level of integrity and competence in all areas of transportation management, as well as excellent problem-solving, communication, interpersonal and consensus building skills.


Specific requirements are as follows:


Equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Transportation or Urban Planning; Civil, Traffic or Transportation Engineering; or related field. Five years of progressively responsible experience in transportation program management, at least two years of which shall have been at a supervisory level. Experience and understanding in grant and budget writing. Registration as a professional civil engineer and traffic engineer is highly desirable but not required.

Ability to: effectively supervise, train, coach and evaluate staff; analyze and prepare concise and accurate technical reports; correctly interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws and regulations; effectively manage engineering consultants and contractors; research, analyze and evaluate new service delivery methods and techniques; respond positively and effectively to change; communicate complex subjects effectively in a public setting; work cooperatively with and provide a high level of customer service to the public, other organizations and City personnel in a team-oriented, problem-solving environment; exercise leadership, creativity and strategic thinking; and anticipate and respond appropriately to political situations.


Health, dental, and vision insurance – The City pays health premium costs for the employee and dependents as provided for under the PERS medical program. City pays dental, vision and excess medical charges up to a total of $2,500 per fiscal year for employee and dependents.

Life Insurance –

Long-term Disability Insurance – City contribution covers full cost of plan.


Holidays and Leave – The City provides 11 paid holidays; and 333 hours of general leave annually.


Other benefits – $320 per month car allowance and management development fund of $3,900.





The annual salary has a maximum of $154,764.00, depending on qualifications. The City’s excellent management benefits package includes:


Retirement – CalPERS Retirement. The employee contribution is tax deferred under IRS Section 414 (h) (2). The City does not participate in Social Security.
