The Parks, Beaches & Recreation Department (PB&R) of the City of Pacifica is recruiting for a Recreation Specialist assigned to its administrative division. This is a fulltime, fully benefitted position, working 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday working in the City's administrative office of its PB & R Division. The City is seeking an enthusiastic, high-energy, customer service-oriented individual for this frontline, highly visible position. This recruitment closes on February 21, 2013 OR upon receipt of the first 100 applicants.
Under direct supervision of the administrative supervisors, the Recreation Specialist may assist in the development, supervision and evaluation of recreation programs for various age groups, may have responsibility for assigned portions of various PB&R programs; may assist in supervision of part-time staff and volunteers; and perform other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION REQUIREMENTS
Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills in order to generate reports, maintain records, etc.; must possess excellent customer service skills; be able to work independently and with teams; ability to work evenings and occasional weekends and holidays; must be proficient in computer software programs (Word, Excel, Publisher) and have the ability to learn department-specific computers computer software programs; must be able to work proficiently and professionally in a fast-paced office environment.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Develop and coordinate activity brochure, flyers and various department publications; work with program contractors in class and program coordination; perform a variety of clerical work that includes but is not limited to the organization of information, filing, preparing and organizing data, documents and reports; maintain appropriate budget controls; may assist in the training and supervising of part-time staff and/or volunteers; handle promotion of programs including but not limited to communication with local publications and outreach to local organizations and schools; may coordinate and participate in functions/events in conjunction with the department’s goals and objectives.
To qualify for this position you must have:
A BA/BS degree in recreation or a related filed plus one year of profession recreation experience;
A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible positions in recreation (or in a related filed).
The Recreation Specialist position may be assigned to one or more of the following areas: Aquatics, Community Center, Teens, Elementary-age Recreation, Senior Services, Specials Class, and Administration.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES
Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s license. Certification in American Red Cross CPR and First Aid required within the first six months of employment.
TOOLS AND EQUIOPMENT USE
Personal computer (Microsoft Office--Word, Excel, Public, Outlook, and other software programs) calculator, copy and fax machines, telephone.

The most qualified candidates will undergo a selection process that may include an oral panel interview and a practical exercise. The selected finalist shall undergo the final phases of the hiring process that include providing the appropriate documents to validate the right to work in the United States, a background check, which includes fingerprinting and a reference check, a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
Holidays: Thirteen (13) days per year.
Vacation: From 11 to 27 days per year, depending on length of service.
Sick leave: Accrual is one day per month, with no limit on accrual.
Retirement: In additional to salary, the City of Pacifica subscribes to CalPERS' retirement formula of 2% at 62. Individuals with prior CalPERS service may be eligible for other retirement formulas. The City of Pacifica does not subscribe to Social Security.
Insurance: The City provides its employees with a cafeteria plan allowance that allows employees to purchase health care benefits through either Teamsters Union #856 Health and Welfare or CalPERS medical benefits plan.
The City contributes toward a dental insurance plan for employee and all eligible dependents. Dental benefits also provided through Teamsterr members through the health care benefits.
The City pays premiums for:
· Life insurance premium in the amount of $30,000.
· Long term disability insurance (to begin sixty days after onset of non-work-related illness or injury).
Training: The City will pay up to $650 per year toward the cost of books and tuition required as part of courses taken that are job-related (currently suspended under current MOU).
Deferred Compensation: Employees may participate in a choice of three deferred compensation plans.
Union Membership: Union membership is required.
