THE CITY GOVERNMENT
Founded in 1875 and incorporated in 1887, the City of Colton covers an area of approximately 18 square miles. Colton is a general law city operating under the Council/Manager form of government. The operating budget for Fiscal Year 2012/13 is 132 million, including operating and capital expenditures, and reflects approximately 330 full and part-time staff.
THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
The City of Colton is offering an excellent opportunity to join a progressive Fire Department that has a strong Fire Union/Fire Chief working relationship and encourages an outstanding working environment. The Department is constantly staffed, with 10 personnel on duty each day. The Department is also very active in the state-wide mutual aid system with both a Type Three wildland engine and OES Type One engine. The Department encourages member participation in department committees in areas such as EMS, Rescue, Training, HazMat, and Apparatus/Equipment.
Under the direction of the Fire Battalion Chief, direct, coordinate and supervise the activities and operations and serve as company commander of a fire suppression engine company; coordinate engine company activities with other City departments/divisions and outside agencies or organizations; establish engine company goals, objectives, policies and procedures in accordance with the Department and City's mission statement and goals; and provide professional, administrative and technical support to the Fire Chief and the Fire Battalion Chiefs.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION for IN-HOUSE
Possess the equivalent of five years of municipal fire suppression experience, successful completion of the course requirements for State of California Fire Officer Certification or successful completion of the five required core classes for an AS/AA degree in Fire Technology and High School diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION for LATERALS
Possess the equivalent of one year experience as a full time Fire Captain with a city, county, state or federal fire agency. Possession of an AS /AA degree in Fire Technology or CSFM Fire Officer certification to include completion of: Fire Command 1A, Fire Command 1B, Fire Command 1C, Training Instructor 1A, Training Instructor 1B, Fire Investigator 1A, Fire Management 1, Fire Prevention 1A, Fire Prevention 1B and I-300 and a valid CA class “A”,”B” or “C” with firefighter endorsement drivers license. Highly desirable applicants will possess S-215, S-231, S-234 and S-290.
