The City of South San Francisco is a fully independent and highly commercialized full-service City with an estimated population of 63,500 growing to 100,000 during business hours. City departments include: Police; Fire; Recreation and Community Services; Public Works; Economic and Community Development; City Attorney; Library; Finance; Information Technology; Human Resources; City Clerk; and Office of the City Manager. The City has a Council-City Manager form of government with more than 400 full-and part-time employees.

 

THE DEPARTMENT:

The Information Technology Department is composed of a Director, two System Administrators, two Services Technicians, and an Administrative Assistant II. The department's mission is to design, implement, and maintain the citywide information technology network; to set standards for all user hardware to assure system compatibility; to support user hardware and assist with the training of employees in the use of various common softwares; and to assist departments in planning for their particular unique technology needs. 

 

The Computer Services Technician implements and supports the activities and operations related to the City’s electronic information systems; installs and supports computer operating system and applications software; performs a variety of complex technical duties in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of computer hardware and software; trains City staff in a variety of applications. This classification is assigned to manage the City’s desktop computers and related equipment. 

 

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying.

 

EXPERIENCE: One year of progressively more responsible municipal experience installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and repairing single-user desktop computer systems. 

TRAINING: An associate's degree from an accredited college with major coursework in computer science, electronic technology, or related field.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

All licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.

* Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, appropriate California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.

* Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP)

 

SELECTION PROCESS: The process will first consist of a review of applications material and responses to supplemental questionnaire. A resume may be included, but does not substitute for a completed application. The highly suitable applicants will be selected to have their applications go through a Comprehensive Application Evaluation (weighted at 100%). A screening committee will be convened to review the application forms, resumes, and supplemental questionnaire of the selected applicants. The committee will select the best qualified candidates to be placed on the employment eligible list.  Upon completion of this Comprehensive Application Evaluation, an eligible list will be established which will be used for the appointment to the position. Possession of minimal qualifications does not guarantee advancement in the selection process and placement on the eligible employment list. Top ranking candidates placed on the eligible list will be invited to the next phase of the selection process and will consist of any or all of the following: oral interview and written/practical exercise.  

Appeals concerning administration of an examination must be submitted in writing within two (2) business days from the date the event occurred.

Prior to a conditional employment offer being made, a thorough background check will be completed, including a fingerprint check. At the time employment is offered, applicants must be able to furnish proof of legal right to work within the United States.

Benefits:

Salary:  $5,669 - $6,891 / month

Retirement:  Membership in Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) with employee contribution paid by employee; Social Security and Medicare participation; and option to participate in 457 deferred compensation plans. City contributes equivalent of 1.5% of base pay towards a medical after-retirement account. 
 
Health Insurance:  City offers choice of medical HMO (two providers) or PPO plan, and offers vision and dental coverage. City pays 100% of HMO, vision and dental premiums for employee and eligible dependents. For PPO, employee pays cost difference between PPO and HMO plans. City provides 100% City-paid short- and long-term disability insurances. The City offers a discretionary benefit account for employees who demonstrate health coverage elsewhere. 
 
Vacation:  Fifteen to thirty working days annual vacation, based on the length of service. 
 
Holidays:  Fourteen paid holidays per year, including one floating holiday.  
 
Programs:  Unreimbursed Medical and Dependent Care Expenses, Long Term Care Plan, Employee Assistance Program, Deferred Compensation, Credit Union, Recreation Classes, and Reduced-fee Child-care Programs are available. 

This classification is in an employee bargaining unit; employees may be required to join and/or pay an equivalent service fee.
