THE POSITION:  This is a highly stressful and demanding job located within the Police Department requiring shift work, weekend and holiday duty.  Although hours vary, this is an on-call, as-needed position that is paid hourly.  Using a Computer-Aided Dispatch System, communication operators dispatch police and fire personnel and equipment under emergency conditions, receive fire, police and disaster alarms and take calls of an emergency and non-emergency nature from citizens.  Operators must remain calm and tactful under trying conditions, remembering detailed information and thinking clearly while performing several tasks at once.




Experience: A current P.O.S.T. Public Safety Dispatcher Certificate (must be attached to application) AND Two (2) years of experience as a Public Safety Dispatcher


Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.


License/Certificate: Typing Certificate issued within the last six months which verifies the ability to type accurately at the rate of 35 net words per minute. You may obtain a FREE typing test at EASTBAY Works:  website: Typing certificates will also be accepted from a public school, business school, temporary agency or a similar agency and should attest a 5-minute timed test and specify net words per minute.  Online Certificates will not be accepted. CERTIFICATE MUST BE ATTACHED TO APPLICATION FOR CONSIDERATION.



SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:  Flexibility of work hours and overtime will be required; stamina for sedentary console operation and dispatching; ability to reach for computer printers, telephones, and radio equipment; dexterity to operate computer keyboards; answer phones; hear tones, signals and radio and phone traffic; read computer screens; and remain calm in emergency situations.


SELECTION PROCEDURE:  Pursuant to City Charter Section 2-4.01 Unclassified Service, “part-time employees paid on an hourly or per diem basis” are not a part of the classified service.  Suitably qualified candidates who submit a completed City of Hayward job application may be invited to participate in the next stages of the recruitment.  

Actual hire depends on success in the departmental selection process including selection interview, background investigation, polygraph, and medical exam.  Please note that applicant's illegal use of a controlled substance will be carefully evaluated with emphasis on recency and extent of such activity and may be a basis for discontinuing hiring consideration of a candidate.
