THE DEPARTMENT: The Hayward Police Department is comprised of a staff of 191 sworn personnel and 112 professional staff.  The Department supports a Community Policing philosophy and offers excellent promotional and special assignment opportunities.  The Patrol Division currently works 3 – 12.5 hour days and has weekends off at least six months out of the year.  Patrol Officers enjoy a minimum of 9 training days per year.  Detectives who work investigations receive incentive pay and we have a wide variety of specialty assignments like SWAT, School Resource Officer, K9, Narcotics, Detectives, Internal Affairs, Special Duty Unit (street and investigative enforcement related to gangs), Traffic, and several task forces in Alameda County.

THE POSITION: Duties include a wide variety of law enforcement assignments including but not limited to: patrol, traffic control, criminal and juvenile investigation, and radio communication.  These require operating a patrol car or motorcycle, arresting and citing violators of laws, writing reports, serving warrants, testifying in court and providing information to the public.  Please see the City of Hayward’s website for a complete job description.

Those candidates who are currently participating in the Police Academy would be hired as a Police Officer Trainee.  Upon successful completion of training at the academy, Trainees will then be sworn in and appointed to the classification of Police Officer.  Police Officer Trainee benefits are limited to those of a civilian employee.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:  

Academy:  Successful completion of a California P.O.S.T. approved Basic Police Academy within the past 12 months with a valid California Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate; Currently attending a P.O.S.T. approved Basic Police Academy as of date of application.

Education:  High school diploma or equivalent. (Possession of an Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is desirable)

Licenses:  Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver’s License.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:  
•      Free of any felony convictions.
•    A citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship (Government Code Para. 1031).
•    Not less than 21 years of age at time of appointment.
•    Vision in each eye, correctable to at least 20/30.
•    Must pass a background investigation.  
•    Must meet all Department medical, physical and psychological standards.  
•    Bi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

1.    Copy of a valid California Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate OR Proof of enrollment in a California P.O.S.T. Certified Police Academy.
2.    Copy of a valid WSTB (Work Sample Test Battery) Physical Agility score (minimum score of 384 required).

SELECTION PROCEDURE:  Candidates must submit a completed City of Hayward job application, copy of Basic P.O.S.T. Application packets will be screened and candidates considered best qualified based on the information provided, will move forward in the examination process.  The examination process may include a pre-qualifying background questionnaire, written examinations and/or oral interviews. Candidates passing all phases of the examination process will be placed on an eligible list for hiring consideration.  Actual hire depends on success in the departmental selection process including selection interview, background investigation, polygraph, psychological evaluation and medical exam.
