Graphic Design Internship

Summer 2013

Intern Position: Graphic Design, Parks Sign Shop

Department: San Mateo County Public Works and Parks

Location: San Mateo

Term of Assignment: Part-time (20 - 30 hours/week) for a duration of 10 – 12 weeks.  Work schedule Monday through Friday; flexible start dates: May/June.

Salary: $12.00 per hour

Intern Supervisor: Ty Kang, Supervising Ranger

The Position

The graphic design intern will work directly with the supervising Ranger who operates the Park Sign Shop to produce directional, informational and educational signs and banners for San Mateo County Parks and its customers.  Under the direction of the ranger, the intern will produce a variety of sign styles and types using state of the art equipment. The intern will learn how to operate equipment responsibly and safely and will create signs based on needs and requests.  This is an opportunity for a student of graphic arts and design to develop hands-on experience.

Ideal Candidate

Applicants currently in the process of earning an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Arts or recent graduates are encouraged to apply.  Candidates with the following skills are sought:

- A basic understanding of design methodologies and typography

- Ability to create designs using: InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop

- Ability to operate or learn how to use sign making equipment

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

- Strong organizational and project management skills

- Interest in learning about local government


The internship runs 8 – 12 weeks at about 20 to 30 hours per week. The start dates and work schedule are flexible.
