Planning Internship – Summer 2013

Intern Position: Parks Planning Intern

Department: San Mateo County Public Works and Parks

Location:  Redwood City

Term of Assignment: Part-time (20 - 30 hours/week) for a duration of 10 – 12 weeks.  Work schedule Monday through Friday; flexible start dates: May/June  

Salary: Unpaid intern position

Intern Supervisor: Sam Herzberg, Senior Planner

The Position

The Parks Planning Intern will work directly with the Senior Planner to update project tracking and work plan spreadsheets, assist in preparation for public meetings and assist during meetings. The intern will also provide support in preparing staff and agency reports and the filing of regulatory applications and documents.  Other related administrative tasks may also be assigned to the intern.

Ideal Candidate

Applicants currently in the process of earning an undergraduate degree in Urban Studies and Planning, Public Administration, or Public Policy; recent graduates are encouraged to apply.  Candidates with the following skills are sought:

- Strong organizational and project management skills

- Excellent interpersonal skills

- Effective written and oral communication

- Strong analytical skills

- Interest in learning about local government


The internship runs 8 – 12 weeks at about 20 to 30 hours per week. The start dates and work schedule is flexible.
