The City of Yuba City is currently recruiting for Public Safety Dispatcher I/II. This position will work out of the Police Department, located at 1545 Poole Blvd. After successfully completing the first six months of employment as a Public Safety Dispatcher I, incumbents are eligible for a 5% merit increase. After successfully completing the first year of employment as a Public Safety Dispatcher I, incumbents are eligible for promotion to a Public Safety Dispatcher II . The Public Safety Dispatcher I/II operates police, fire, and local government radio equipment; dispatches mobile units and other equipment to points ordered; and does other related work. Incumbents must be willing to work varying schedules, weekends, holidays and days off. 

The mission of the Police Department exemplifies the Department’s commitment to quality service, innovation and leadership. “While exercising principles of ethical behavior, reflecting positive values and respecting the Constitutional rights of all we encounter - We work in partnership with the community toward the goals of protecting life and property, solving neighborhood problems and enhancing the quality of life in our City.” The duties of the Public Safety Dispatcher I/II include, but are not limited to the following: receiving communications from officers via radio and communications with the public via phone; dispatching police, fire, ambulance and other emergency vehicles using state-of-the-art computer technology; maintaining radio call log for calls received and vehicles dispatched; answering requests for information in a timely manner; occasionally assisting officers with search or witnessing of suspects and prisoners; possess the ability and willingness to learn and follow established policies, procedure and protocol; become proficient at understanding basic laws, both civil and criminal; ability to relay emergency medical protocols to necessary parties; to possess familiarity with basic computer concepts; and willingness to assume responsibility of other assigned tasks. Incumbents must possess sufficient knowledge of spelling, grammar and vocabulary to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. The ability to perform multiple cognitive and manual tasks simultaneously coupled with the ability to remain calm, react quickly and efficiently in a variety of routine and emergency situations. Incumbents will be expected to work a variety of shifts to include; both day and night shifts, holidays, weekends and days off.

Public Safety Dispatcher I

Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.


ExperienceAt least one (1) year of recent, responsible, experience working in a multi-tasking environment  involving public contact or six (6) months of recent, communications dispatching experience.

Bilingual skills and excellent typing skills are highly desirable.

Public Safety Dispatcher II

Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.


Experience: At least one (1) year of experience as a Public Safety Dispatcher I or at least one (1) year of recent, full-time communication dispatching experience involving contact.

Bilingual skills and excellent typing skills are highly desirable.


Salary: The current monthly salary for Public Safety Dispatcher I is $3,180 - $3,339 and Public Safety Dispatcher II is $3,744 - $4,550. *Salary has not been adjusted to reflect the current furlough program.


Retirement: New employees into the CalPERS retirement system will enroll in the 2%@62 formula. Employees meeting CalPERS classic member status will enroll in the 2%@55 formula. The City does not participate in Social Security. Deferred Compensation: A Deferred Compensation Pro- gram is available for City employees. Medical/Dental/Vision: The City offers an excellent bene- fits package with generous City contributions for employ- ees and their dependents to health, dental and vision pre- miums.


Employee Assistance Program (EAP): The City pays for an EAP that offers employee and family members up to six (6) visits per incident, unlimited incidents.


Life Insurance: $5,000 life insurance policy paid by the City. Employees may elect to purchase additional cover- age.

Vacation: 13 days annually for new employees. Vacation accrual increases with time of service up to a maximum of 23 days. Sick Leave: 12 days annually. Unlimited accrual with pay off provision upon termination of City employment with a minimum of 5 years of City service.


Flexible Spending Account: Allows for pre-tax deductions for unreimbursed medical and dependent care expenses. Computer Purchase Program: Assists employees in the purchase of computer hardware, software and peripheral equipment.
