NATURE OF POSITION
Under direction performs journey level work in the testing, repair, and installation of electrical revenue metering and its component parts, electrical substation and distribution equipment; and performs other related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Installs, tests, calibrates and repairs all types of revenue meters, instruments and associated electrical equipment; tests, cleans and repairs transformers; installs, tests, services and repairs circuit breakers, voltage regulators, reclosers, relays, substation wiring and equipment and other substation apparatus; programs, installs, maintains, and services SCADA system and equipment; makes special load checks and tests, and performs trouble-shooting work on customer premises; uses personal computer and other computer equipment running established programs.
To be considered, applicants must possess a combination of education, training and experience equivalent to the minimum qualifications listed below. Possession of the minimum qualifications does not assure a place on the Eligible List.
- Graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented by courses in advanced electrical theory and mathematics involved in alternating current electrical theory and completion of an approved electric utility apprenticeship or equivalent program.
- Five years of meter or substation related experience with an electric utility, two years of which shall have been at the journey level. SCADA experience is highly desirable.
- Possession of a valid State of California Class C Driver's License and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
NOTE: AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION, APPLICANT MUST SUBMIT A D.M.V. PRINTOUT OF HIS/HER 10-YEAR DRIVING RECORD FROM THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, OR STATE OF RESIDENCY, DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES. Driving record must be dated within 45 days of application date. Driving record issued by non-government agency, e.g., insurance company, may not be substituted.
- Willingness and/or ability to respond to after-hours emergency calls as required. Must be able to work in high places and confined spaces.

PART II: An evaluation of those applications and Supplemental Questionnaires to select those best qualified to continue in the exam. NOTE: Meeting the minimum requirements for this position does not guarantee that the applicant will be invited to continue in the examination process.
PART III: A Job Related Qualifications Appraisal Interview which may include a Performance Maintenance Skills Test (weighted 100%). The Panel will conduct a comprehensive review of each candidate’s technical knowledge and overall suitability for the position. Candidates receiving a score of 70% or more will have their names placed on an Eligible List. The number of names certified to the department will exceed by four (4) the number of vacancies to be filled. Placement on the eligible list does not guarantee employment. Tie scores will be broken by giving priority to the candidate based on the earliest application date. Prior to appointment, a thorough reference check will be conducted. The successful candidate may also be required to pass a City paid medical examination. Federal law requires, that prior to employment, you must furnish proof of your identity and eligibility for employment in the United States, such as driver’s license, original Social Security Card, U.S. passport, or appropriate INS forms, etc.
The EXAMINATION may include material to measure KNOWLEDGE OF the principles and practices of journey level work in electrical revenue metering and electrical substation and distribution equipment; principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the installation, testing, removal and maintenance of transformers, regulators, capacitors, switching and fusing equipment, circuit breakers, controls and instrumentation, relays, batteries and chargers, revenue meters and other associated equipment; electrical terminology, mathematics and mechanical theory, and safe work practices and procedures. ABILITY TO operate electrical test equipment and tools; interpret schematic drawings and computerized data; operate computer equipment; interpret electrical codes and regulations; apply established Alameda Municipal Power policies and procedures; work independently; use initiative and judgment seeking guidance for situations where standard procedures may not apply; establish and maintain accurate records; communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
