NATURE OF POSITION

 

The Animal Control Assistant at the Animal Shelter performs a variety of non-sworn police work and will work approximately 25 hours per week.  Duties include but are not limited to:  assisting in the operation of Shelter facilities including explaining City regulations and taking action where necessary; driving a City truck or van, picking up dead animals; locating owners of impounded animals; processing records; and making inquiries and updating computer systems.  The successful incumbent will have excellent customer service and communication skills.

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

 

To be considered, applicants should possess the combination of education and experience necessary to provide the required knowledge and abilities for the position. A typical way to obtain these would be:

 

1.      Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school, and;

2.      One year of animal care and/or animal control experience and responsible service-oriented experience dealing with the public.

3.      Ability to perform computer data entry and routine typing with speed and accuracy.

4.      Possession of a valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Willingness and/or ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends; work on an on-call basis; work irregular duty assignments; operate computers, wear a uniform and safety equipment; work outside in inclement weather; work under undesirable and hazardous conditions; conform to department grooming standards; work alone; attend educational sessions as required.

 

SELECTION PROCESS

 

To be considered, candidates must submit a completed City of Alameda Job Application. Applicants will be screened and evaluated based on the information provided.  Those best qualified, on the basis of this review, will be interviewed and considered for employment by the Police Department.

 

Candidates considered for appointment must pass a job related medical examination and successfully pass a background investigation.  Incumbents must demonstrate a state of physical and mental health consistent with the ability to perform assigned duties and must be free from animal related allergies or immobilizing fear of animals causing the inability to perform all prescribed functions.

VETERAN’S PREFERENCE CREDIT:  A job applicant qualifies as a veteran if honorably discharged from active military, reservist, or National Guard duty of at least 18 consecutive months within the past five (5) years of the date of application. In case of discharge attributable to service-connected injuries or illnesses, the 18 months active duty requirement need not be fulfilled. An applicant claiming veteran’s preference credit must attach to their application, a legible copy of their DD-214 verifying the type of discharge and date(s) of active service.  NO OTHER DOCUMENTATION WILL BE ACCEPTED.
