The City of American Canyon is seeking an Environmental Specialist I to perform professional level analytical and specialized work of moderate difficulty in the development, implementation and promotion of environmental programs such as integrated solid waste, pollution prevention, industrial pretreatment, water conservation, recycled water, biosolids, storm water, and/or urban runoff/clean water programs; and collect and analyze wastewater influent, effluent and sludge samples to determine compliance with prescribed requirements and assist in control of the treatment facility. (The primary tasks may vary depending upon assignment). The current vacancy is responsible for performing laboratory duties in support of the City’s Wastewater Treatment Facility’s NPDES permit and recycled water permit/program as well as field sampling and inspections in support of the pollution prevention and pretreatment programs.
Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major in Public Health, Environmental Health, Environmental Studies, Integrated Waste Management, Environmental Engineering, Public or Business Administration, Geography, Geology, or a closely related field.
Experience: Two years of full-time professional experience performing laboratory analyses and/or pollution prevention/pretreatment program management activities; preferably including: typical wastewater laboratory wet chemistry and microbiology analyses (i.e.,BOD, TSS, ammonia, pH, turbidity, total coliform, enterococcus), recycled water management (sampling, analyses, user site inspections, permitting), wastewater pretreatment (sampling and inspection of industrial and commercial users), and pollution prevention (program management, outreach) programs or other closely related activity.
Certificates: Requirements for specific assignments: CWEA Grade I or II Laboratory Analyst Certificate required within 9 months of employment; CWEA Grade I or II Environmental Compliance Inspector Certificate required within 9 months of employment.
