Each member of the department is expected to live up to a unique “Statement of Values.” As a police officer, you will be responsible for a variety of law enforcement activities involving the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, prevention and investigation of crimes, and maintenance of order in a designated area during an assigned shift on foot, bicycle, motorcycle, or by patrol car. This position participates in 4/10 and 3/12 work week schedules and must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays. There is an 18-month probationary period which can be extended up to an additional three (3) months. This position is represented by the Emeryville Police Officers Association (EPOA).
The minimum qualifications standards that must be met for consideration of this position:
- Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for, and has applied for, citizenship at least one year before making application for employment;
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent with related college course work;
- Must be at least 21 years of age by date of appointment;
- Possess a valid California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record (an ongoing requirement);
- Of good moral character;
- Free of any felony convictions;
- Corrected vision of in each eye to 20/30; normal color vision and hearing;
- Free from any physical, emotional or medical condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer;
- Academy Attendee/Graduate: Must be currently enrolled in or have successfully graduated from a POST approved Law Enforcement Academy at the time of application. Academy attendees must graduate prior to appointment. Academy graduates must have graduated within the last 3 years (or have a requalification certificate dated within the last 3 years);
- Lateral: Must have a POST Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced certificate and not have been separated more than 3 years from a law enforcement position in the State of California.
The City provides a competitive compensation and benefits package. Salary for this position is $97,872 to $116,796 and the benefits include:
- Retirement: Classic Members – 3% @ 55 (based on highest three consecutive years); Employee pays the 9% member contribution plus cost-sharing of 3%, totaling 12% (effective 7/1/17, the employee cost-sharing will increase to 4%, for a total of 13% employee contribution). New Members -- 2.7% @ 57 PERS Plan (based on highest three consecutive years). Employee pays the 12.25% member contribution. The City does not participate in Social Security.
- Vacation: 0 – 4 years of service 2 weeks; 5 – 9 years of service 3 weeks; 10 – 20 years of service 4 weeks; 21+ years 5 weeks.
- Holidays: Thirteen (13) paid holidays per year.
- Sick Leave: Three (3) weeks per year, with unlimited accumulation.
- Shift Differential: 4% for hours worked between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am.
- Uniform Allowance: $1,200.00
- Health & Welfare: Medical, dental, and vision care coverage paid by the agency (to a capped amount) for the employee and eligible dependents.
- Misc. Benefits: City provides life/AD&D, chiropractic and employee assistance program benefits.
- Education Incentive: 2.5% and 5% dependent upon certification or college degree.
- Scheduled Salary Increases: 1% effective 6/30/17.

All candidates are screened for minimum qualifications and application completeness. All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on a Certification List. This List will be forwarded to the Police Department, and the candidates will be contacted by the Police Department for further processing. Candidates selected to fill vacancies must pass a background, polygraph and psychological evaluation, a Police Chief’s Oral Interview and a post-conditional job offer medical examination. Interested applicants are encouraged to interview current personnel and request a ride-along experience.
Aside from the requirements above, suitability for employment is based upon the following skills: problem-solving, learning, observations, interpersonal relations, dependability, written communications, which includes the ability to use a typewriter and/or computer keyboard for report writing, interest in people, integrity and credibility as a witness in a court of law.
