Under direct supervision incumbents may be asked to sort and shelve library material; to maintain newspaper files; and to sort and shelve periodicals; and to do other related work as required. This position is part-time and incumbents are not eligible for fringe benefits or supplemental benefits. Positions in this class differ from others in the library series in that incumbents are generally students interested in pursuing a career in library work.
Library Page I's work in the close presence of his/her supervisor or in a situation of close control and easy reference. Work assignments are given with explicit instructions or are so routine that few, if any deviations from established practice are made without checking with the supervisor. Library Page II's require less supervision with only general verbal instructions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following)
- Arrange and shelve library material.
- Clean and dust library collections.
- Shift and organize library materials on the shelves
- Read shelves to maintain library material in proper order.
- Return magazines and periodicals to designated location.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Positions requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in preparing reports using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading written reports and work-related documents. Acute hearing is required when providing direct customer service or phone service. Occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds such as files, stack of papers, and reference books.
QUALIFICATIONS Education and/or Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Library Page II. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess one year of experience performing the duties of a Library Page I. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. No prior experience is necessary for the Library Page I position but the equivalent of a high school diploma is required.
Possession of a valid class "C" California driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS: Knowledge of:
Basic elements of correct English usage, grammar and spelling. Basic office terminology, procedures and equipment.
Learn library procedures and the Dewey Decimal System.
Compare names and numbers rapidly and accurately.
Communicate effectively with a variety of personnel and establish/maintain effective working relationships.
Effectively operate a motor vehicle on City streets.
Operate computer and applicable software.
