The City of San Bruno Fire Department is hiring Lateral Firefighters who have graduated from a Fire Academy, successfully completed a probationary period, and serve at least one year as a full-time paid professional firefighter (seasonal experience does not count). Firefighters engage in firefighting, provide medical aid, and perform suppression and prevention activities to protect life and property. Employees in this classification who are paramedic certified may be assigned to paramedic duty. This is a Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) non-exempt position.

The application period closes at 5pm on Friday, June 3, 2017 and includes completion of a supplemental questionnaire, and upload of EMT or Paramedic certificates.

-High school diploma or equivalent (AA or AS degree is highly desirable)
-Graduation from Firefighter I Academy
-Completion of probationary period and at least one year of full-time paid professional experience as a firefighter (seasonal experience does not count)
-Ability to successfully pass a rigorous background investigation
-AA or AS degree highly desirable

-Current California Class B driver’s license or Class C driver’s license with Firefighter endorsement prior to completion of probationary period
-Must possess and maintain a valid California EMT Basic or National EMT certification

The ideal candidate will have the ability to learn the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment, learn to apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques, work well with hazardous materials, work in a hazardous environment including electrical and mechanical hazards, work in confined spaces, perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training, or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke, produce extreme effort/ energy for short periods of time plus endurance, remain calm and follow instructions under pressure, stress and emergency situations, analyze situations quickly and draw logical conclusion, follow verbal and written instructions, communicate effectively orally and in writing, establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public, work cooperatively with all those contacted in the course of work, tolerate others and their attitudes and get along in a community living environment, perform cooperatively and effectively as a member of a team, meet departmental physical standards, crawl, twist upper body, climb ladders and work at heights, frequently lift and/or move up to 25-pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 150 pounds, effectively use the following: medical equipment, fire apparatus, vehicle, fire pumps, hoses, and other standard firefighting equipment, ladders, radio, pager, personal computer, phone, and perform other duties as assigned.
