THE POSITION: A Community Service Officer performs a wide variety of civilian police duties for the Police Department. The primary assignment for this position is in the jail facility and involves duties related to booking, searching, monitoring, and transporting prisoners. An additional 5% of the base salary is paid for jail assignments. After successful completion of probation, Community Service Officers may apply for other rotational special assignments within the Department such as Patrol, Traffic, or the Telephone Reporting Unit.
REQUIREMENTS: The successful candidate must be able to work rotating shifts as well as nights and weekends and should possess strong interpersonal skills. The ideal Community Service Officer must also be able to respond quickly and calmly in emergency situation and possess effective oral and written communication skills.
Experience: One year of experience involving high public contact, preferably in law enforcement.
Two years of college in law enforcement or related field.
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
License/Certificate: Typing Certificate issued within the last six months which verifies the ability to type accurately at the rate of 25 net words per minute. Typing certificates will also be accepted from a public school, business school, temporary agency or a similar agency and should attest a 5-minute timed test and specify net words per minute. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's license at the time of appointment. Must possess or obtain, during the probationary period, certificate for the “Basic Correction Officer Core Course” issued by the State of California Standards and Training for Correction Program.
SELECTION PROCEDURE: All candidates must submit a completed City of Hayward application with a valid typing certificate attached. Applications without certificates will not be considered. Qualifying applicants will be invited to participate in an examination process which may include a written exam and an oral interview. A written examination scored pass/fail must be taken to qualify for the oral interview examination. Candidates must pass both the written and the oral examinations to be placed on the eligible list for hiring consideration by the Police Department. Ranking on the list will be based upon the score received on the oral interview examination (weighted 100%) for the purpose of ranking on an eligible list. Actual hire depends on success in the departmental selection process including selection interview, background investigation, polygraph, psychological evaluation and medical exam.
