Salary: $8,926.67 - 10,855.87 per month DOE
Assistant Engineer: Under direction, to perform civil and/or traffic engineering work of average difficulty in the development, design and construction, and maintenance of streets, traffic signals, street lighting, traffic control devices, drainage systems, and a variety of municipal projects and facilities; and to do related work as required.

The current vacancy is in CIP. This position applies the technical knowledge of engineering principles to support CIP projects and will provide project design, and management to a variety of street, pavement, park projects, and other Public Works projects. Prior experience and knowledge of delivering grant funded projects is highly desirable. The duties include preparing design plans and specifications, and providing construction and project budget management support; procuring and managing consultant services; and processing grant documents.
Typical Duties: Performs a variety of tasks leading to and including the implementation of municipal public works projects, programs, and services including research and development, analysis and administration, and preparing proposals and budgets; prepares engineering designs, reports, drawings, estimates, and schedules in connection with the construction and maintenance of engineering projects which may include streets, storm drains, traffic signals, street lighting, traffic control devices and related facilities; confers with supervisors during preliminary and design stages of work, and discusses technical and policy problems; makes preliminary design studies to determine the most economical and satisfactory installation for a given location; works with personnel from other City departments and public agencies, as well as from consulting firms and the public in coordinating engineering activities with related work programs; may supervise engineering personnel, consultants, and contractors; performs construction administration and inspection; and performs related duties as assigned.
Ability to: Understand, organize and implement assignments which may involve complex technical instructions; prepare accurate reports, plans, specifications, cost estimates and engineering reports; make accurate engineering computations and drawings; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; work effectively with minimal supervision; maintain effective working relationships with others including the public.
Knowledge of: Principles, practices and methods of civil or traffic engineering as applied to the design and construction of streets and related municipal facilities; computers as used in design, construction and maintenance.
Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in civil or transportation engineering plus two years professional level engineering experience; OR an E.I.T. Certificate plus two years college and four years professional level engineering experience; OR a Master's degree in engineering and one year of professional level engineering experience.
Possession of: Valid California Driver's License.
