Are you interested in gaining valuable work experience in the field of Government and Public Works Department? Look no further than the City of Campbell! The City of Campbell's Public Works Department is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the opening for Environmental Summer Intern!
The Environmental Student Intern will participate actively in functions of the Public Works Environmental Management Division and will benefit from working in a unique program that provides experience in three (3) different environmental programs in the Public Works Department:
- Solid Waste
- Stormwater
- Water Conservation
The Environmental Student Intern will also gain knowledge from an Environmental Program Specialist who will provide supervision and training for in the office and on the field experiences.
Participants in the 2023 City of Campbell Summer Internship Program will be expected to commit to the entire 12-week program.
Each intern will work a maximum of 20 hours a week earning $15.50-$23.00 per hour. Typical work hours will be Monday thru Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with flexibility to be further discussed during the placement portion of the hiring process.
Typical duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Develop and update content on social media and the website
- Develop an environmental outreach campaign from conception to completion
- Customer Service and problem-solving solid waste questions and concerns
- Implement the State's waste diversion compliance and record keeping
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
- Must be eligible to work in the United States
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must possess a high school diploma or educational equivalent
- Must successfully pass a thorough background investigation prior to employment
- Currently enrolled junior or senior undergraduate or graduate student with a passion for public service, outreach, and environmental programs such as solid waste, stormwater, and water conservation.
- Passion for public service: should have a strong desire to make a positive impact in the community through their work with the City of Campbell. Should be motivated to help develop and implement programs that promote sustainability and protect the environment.
- Knowledge of environmental issues: Should have a basic understanding of environmental issues and the challenges facing local communities. Should be familiar with environmental regulations and policies related to solid waste, stormwater, and water conservation.
- Excellent communication skills: Should be able to communicate effectively with colleagues, city officials, and members of the public. They should be able to explain complex technical information in a clear and concise manner.
- Strong analytical skills: Should be able to analyze data and identify trends related to environmental programs. Should be able to use this information to make recommendations for program improvements and identify areas for growth.
- Ability to work independently: Should be able to work independently and take initiative in developing and implementing environmental programs. Should be able to manage their time effectively and prioritize tasks based on the needs of the City of Campbell.
- Experience with outreach and education: Should have experience with outreach and education programs related to environmental issues. Should be able to develop outreach materials and deliver presentations to diverse audiences.
- Technical skills: Familiarity with computer software and applications used for managing environmental programs would be helpful.
- NOTE: Summer internship assignments are at-will and the employee is paid on an hourly basis.

Ideal Candidate
The Ideal Candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Passion for public service, outreach, and environmental programs such as solid waste, stormwater, and water conservation
- Interest and familiarity in environmental policies
- Excellent computer skills; MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and internet
- Experience in providing customer service and public outreach
- Knowledge of Canva design
Overall, an ideal candidate for a City of Campbell public works environment internship would be someone who is passionate about public service and the environment, with a basic understanding of environmental issues and regulations, excellent communication and analytical skills, the ability to work independently, experience with outreach and education programs, and technical skills related to environmental program management.
