The City of Carmel-by-the-Sea is currently recruiting for Senior Maintenance Worker. This recruitment will establish an eligibility list that will be used to support several divisions within the Public Works Department. This is a semi-skilled manual labor position reporting to the Public Works Superintendent or Facility Maintenance Supervisor. This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of tasks to maintain the City’s infrastructure including streets, sidewalks, drainage facilities, forest, beach, parks, buildings, and facilities. Applicants with experience and training in building construction trades and facility maintenance are especially encouraged to apply.


Work tasks will include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, flooring, roofing, and related duties

  • Performs routine maintenance on HVAC equipment, sumps, lighting, and roll-up doors

  • Checks the condition of facilities, performs field inventories, collects data, and estimates quantities

  • Assists with obtaining quotes from contractors and vendors for various services and materials

  • May oversee contracted janitorial services

  • Operates dump truck, backhoe, loader, asphalt roller, chipper, and other heavy equipment

  • Repairs rail fencing, benches, trash enclosures, signs, furniture, fixtures, windows, and doors

  • Pours and finishes concrete slabs and sidewalks

  • Repairs, spreads, rakes, and rolls asphalt pavement, berms, and swales

  • Paints traffic markings and stripes, and maintains traffic signs

  • Plants, waters, fertilizes, prunes, and cuts trees and landscaping

  • Rakes, clears weeds, and cleans parks, medians, and open space

  • Tests and repairs irrigation system components and backflow preventers

  • Cleans out drainage inlets, pipes, culverts, and manholes

  • Sets up traffic control devices and barriers

  • Instructs Maintenance Workers on safety and proper work practices

Successful candidates will demonstrate a high level of integrity; be a team player who has the maturity to work independently and make judgment calls when necessary, have a collaborative style and the ability to influence others into action. Ideal candidates must have a passion for local government, public works, and/or building construction, act professionally with the public, and strive to meet city goals and objectives.

Qualifications: Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. Three years of experience in maintenance and construction work including two years of experience in one of the following areas: building maintenance, street maintenance, forestry care, and/or operating heavy equipment.
