Staff Assistant - Outdoor Recreation, Safety, and Youth Programs

Position: Staff Assistant (Part-Time Temporary Non-Benefited position, maximum 995 hours per fiscal year)

Hours per Week: 20 to 25 hours per week. Shifts will occur between the hours of 8am – 5pm. Hours may increase during the summer. Available on the following dates:  9 weeks of summer programs, plus July 4th.

Salary Range:  $18.50 to $20.50 per hour

The Position: The City of Cupertino Recreation and Community Services Department has a year-round employment opportunity and is looking for a self-motivated, enthusiastic, and reliable Staff Assistant to lead and provide assistance in our Outdoor Recreation, Safety, and Youth programs.

Under supervision, the Staff Assistant will promote and organize recreational activities within the preschool, youth, and teen program area, and will assist with the implementation of special events.

Overall, the Staff Assistant will help ensure services and programs run smoothly and meet the interests of our community.   

Typical job duties include, but are not limited to
Interacting with customers and program instructors.

Preparing program documents.

Supporting staff with training sessions.

Assisting with implementing special events.

Organizing program activities.

Creating fliers and other promotional material.

Ordering and gathering supplies.

Maintaining a safe and productive work environment.

Interacting professionally with parents, participants, recreation staff, and community partners.

Providing general administrative assistance to the Recreation Coordinators and Recreation Supervisor.

The Staff Assistant may assist with the supervision of Recreation Leaders, Senior Recreation Leaders, Preschool Teachers, and teen volunteers.

Qualifications:

Knowledge of:
Knowledge of safety precautions as they relate to youth and teens.

Ability to:
Ability to supervise staff and maintain discipline with program participants

Ability to prepare clear and accurate documents.

Must be able to manage time effectively, show initiative, work independently, and demonstrate knowledge of recreation and leisure activities for youth/teens.

Ability to navigate the Microsoft Office Suite.

Ability to learn to quickly learn and adjust to new computer software.

Must be able to anticipate the needs of programs and supervisors. 

Must be able to provide own transportation to and from work.

Experience and Education
Must have a high school diploma/GED, and 1,000 HOURS of relevant work experience, such as: recreational camp experience, day care experience, and/or recreational administrative skills.

College-level courses in recreation and/or early education are desirable, but not required

Licenses and Certifications
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license is required.

Current CPR and First Aid certification. Must be CPR and First Aid certified within two months of employment. If you are offered a position, CPR and First Aid certification and re-certification training will be offered to employees. Possible training dates will be discussed with employees.
