The City of Dixon is recruiting to fill approximately 10 positions of Lifeguard/Instructor for the 2018 Aquatic Season and to establish an employment list for possible future use.

This recruitment is open until filled and may close when a sufficient number of applications have been received. Applications will be reviewed weekly until the position has been filled.

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor and Aquatics Supervisor, Lifeguard/Instructors will be responsible for performing first aid and emergency rescues, enforcing pool rules, performing cashiering duties, supervising pool patrons, and instructing swim lessons. Lifeguard/Instructors only teach non-A.R.C. swim classes. 

This position is subject to random controlled substance testing and/or breath alcohol testing.

Employment Processing: Those selected are subject to pre-employment drug testing and finger printing. In accordance with Federal law, an employee must provide proof of identity and proof that they may legally work in the United States.

Other Requirements: 

Must possess current certifications in the following areas:

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/First Aid
  • First Aid for the Public Safety Personnel (Title22)
  • CPR-AED for the Lifeguard

 Must be at least 15 years of age by time of employment.

 Spanish language skills desirable.

Benefits

This position does not receive any medical, dental or vision benefits.

CalPERS Annuitants will be limited to only 960 hours in a fiscal year.

Special Instructions

LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT:  Temporary/Seasonal Employment

Aquatics Season:  End of May - End of October 2018 for programs offered at the Pat Granucci Aquatic Center.

Staff can average between 10-40 hours per week based on the season, needs of the program, and staff availability.  Staff may be required to work weekends and holidays.

Exam Process:  Only a limited number of candidates, whose applications indicate that, among those competing, they are better qualified in terms of related experience, will be invited to participate in the recruitment process, which will consist of:

Oral Interview (weighted 100%).

Knowledge of:  Aquatics safety standards; first aid practices; swimming rescue techniques; CPR; basic swim instruction techniques and methods; stroke mechanics; principles and practices of customer service; principles and practices of workplace safety; and basic mathematics. 

Ability to:  Manage large groups of people under pressure; relate well with members of the public including youth and their parents; use courtesy, tact and firmness when dealing with the public; issue clear and concise verbal instructions; understand and follow oral and written instructions; and be a self starter.
