Description

The City of Dixon is recruiting to fill one-two (1-2) temporary, part-time positions to oversee the City's seasonal youth basketball program. The Sports Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of the Youth Basketball program, ranging from development, program content, scheduling, supplies, instruction, and implementation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·       Assist in the implementation of recreation and community service program goals, objectives, policies and priorities.

·       Plan, organize, coordinate, implement, develop, supervise, and evaluate City sponsored sports programs and volunteer staff.

·       Prepare news releases, posters, flyer's and brochures to publicize activities.

·       Prepare oral and written reports as necessary.

·       Report directly to Recreation Supervisor

·       Respond to questions, complaints, and emergency situations; take appropriate course of action and notify the Recreation Manager whenever necessary.

·       Maintain logs, files and other record keeping systems.

·       Conduct coach meetings to distribute equipment, game schedules, practice schedule, handbooks and implement trainings.

·       Develop and maintain positive working relationships with school district staff responsible for gymnasium facilities used by the City; as well as program participants, City employees, and the general public.

·       Maintain open communication with all staff and patrons of the program.

·       Effectively supervise use of school and/or City facilities to minimize misuse and vandalism.

·       Make every reasonable effort to continually improve the manner in which the job is performed and increase the quality of service to the public.

·       Be capable to instruct all aspects of program, as well as oversee recreation leaders and contracted referees.

·       Problem solver during games (rule interpretation with referees, coaches, participants and parents).

·       Complete all accident forms and report to Recreation Manager.

·       Maintain safety for all participants.

·       Responsible for cleanliness of the program area (gyms) before, during and after program.

·       Keep track of program inventory.

·       Prepare program practice schedules.

·       Oversee team creation.

·       Responsible for coordinating team picture day and Jamboree.

·       Oversee staff, participants, referees and volunteer coaches on game days.

·       Responsible for requesting bids and ordering uniforms and coach shirts with Recreation Manager’s approval.

·       Prepares gyms for game day (scoreboards, first aid, stat books, wrist bands, etc.) at all courts.

·       Schedule referees and recreation leaders for games.

In addition to the above essential duties and responsibilities, when assigned to the Youth Basketball Program:

·       Recruit and fingerprint coaches.

·       Be capable to instruct all aspects of program, as well as oversee recreation leaders and contracted referees.

·       Problem solver during games (rule interpretation with referees, coaches, participants and parents).

·       Complete all accident forms and report to Recreation Manager.

·       Maintain safety for all participants.

·       Responsible for cleanliness of the program area (gyms) before, during and after program.

·       Keep track of program inventory.

·       Prepare program practice schedules.

·       Oversee team creation.

This position is subject to random controlled substance testing and/or breath alcohol testing.

LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT: November 2018 through March 2019

Ideal Candidate

QUALIFICATIONS: Applications are invited from qualified persons who possess the knowledge and abilities to perform the job. A typical way to obtain such knowledge and ability would be: 

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience: Prior experience participating in related sports programs or leagues. Some work experience in coordinating, developing, coaching, and supervising sports programs is desirable. 

Other Requirements:

·     Possession of, or ability to obtain First Aid CPR AED course completion card, required upon 2 months of employment.

·     Pursuant to Section 10911.5 of the California Education Code, applicant will be required to submit one set of fingerprints to the California Department of Justice prior to employment.  

·     The ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable. 

·     Knowledge of rules of basketball is highly desirable.

·     Coaching experience is highly desirable.

.     Temporary/Seasonal employees must submit to random alcohol and drug testing.
