The Dixon Police Department is anticipating upcoming retirements and will be recruiting to establish an eligibility list of qualified candidates for the police sergeant (multiple positions). The Department is building a new management team, and is seeking candidates to fill these management positions. Police officers interested in expanding their leadership and developmental experiences are encouraged to apply for the opportunity to join a progressive, growing police department. The Dixon Police Department is committed to providing tailored training and experiences to sergeants, who are essential in the mentoring and development of a young patrol team. Sergeants serve as watch commanders and are critical components of the delivery of police services.
Sergeants also have opportunities to develop specialty assignments or areas of interest, like Investigations, Community Services, Firearms Training/Force Options Simulator and other assignments.
THE POSITION: Positions in this class have responsible charge of patrol and law enforcement activity on an assigned shift. Police Sergeants are also responsible for maintaining discipline, insuring that departmental rules and regulations are followed, resolving complaints of subordinate employees, and preparing employee performance appraisals. Positions in this class work with armed police personnel who may be assigned to work in uniform or in plain clothes. Shift schedules and job assignments may be rotational. The duties involve both field and office work, and require frequent public contact including difficult or tense situations. The City is looking for candidates who are currently employed with five (5) years of police experience; has field training officer experience; has attendance at a leadership class or academy.
SELECTION PROCESS: Apply immediately and include all required documents at the time application is submitted. Applications and supplemental questions will be reviewed and screened, and the most qualified candidates will be invited to continue in the examination process. The process includes a Personal History Statement (PHS) review, written examination, interview panel, polygraph exam, extensive personal background investigation, credit history, pre-employment medical, with drug test, and psychological assessments.
Failure of any component during the exam process eliminates the candidate from further selection processing.
EMPLOYMENT PROCESSING: All appointees are required to complete a field training program and successfully complete an 18-month probationary period, and in accordance with Federal law, are to provide proof of identity and proof that they may legally work in the United States. Internal appointees are required to complete a field training program and complete a twelve month probationary period.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The City is currently looking for candidates that are currently employed with three (3) years of police experience; field training officer experience; attendance at a leadership class or academy.

Education: Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade, supplemented by college level courses in Police Science.
Experience: Minimum of three years of continuous employment performing law enforcement peace officer duties equivalent to City of Dixon Police Officer. Experience with the Dixon Police Department is desirable.
Possession of a POST Intermediate; a POST Advanced Certificate is desirable.
A valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment. Spanish speaking ability desirable but not required.
