Description

The City of Dixon is recruiting to fill one full time permanent position of Deputy Public Works Director in the Public Works Department.

This position directs, supervises, and coordinates activities and programs in multiple maintenance and operations divisions within the City Engineer/Public Works Department. These divisions include, but are not limited to: the City's Transit System, Parks and Building Maintenance, Streets and Utilities Maintenance, Lighting and Landscape District Maintenance, and Recreation.

EXAM PROCESS:  Resume's will be screened in relation to the criteria outlined. Candidates deemed to have the most relevant qualifications will be invited to interview with subject matter experts, following which, the most qualified candidates will be referred to the City Engineer/Public Works Director. 

EMPLOYMENT PROCESSING: Candidates selected for hire must successfully complete and pass a personal background investigation, and a pre-employment medical examination. All appointees are required to successfully complete a 12-month probationary period, and in accordance with Federal law, are to provide proof of identity and proof that they may legally work in the United States.

Ideal Candidate

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Abilities:

Working knowledge of the philosophy, objectives, methods, equipment, materials, and work practices involved in the maintenance and operation of municipal infrastructure. Possesses knowledge of: management techniques pertinent to infrastructure maintenance and operation, including planning, scheduling, training identification of budget needs and maintenance of budget; potential hazards and necessary safety precautions, to follow as they relate to the use of tools and equipment required to perform various maintenance activities; and of management and training principles. 

Education/Experience:

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: 

Possession of an Associate's degree in business administration, construction management, civil engineering, or closely related field. Possession of a Bachelor's degree is highly desirable.

Experience: 

Seven years of experience in construction management, public works maintenance management or related activity, including at least five years at a supervisory level.

In lieu of education, ten years of experience in construction management, public works maintenance management or related activity, including seven years at a supervisory level.

Other Requirements:

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment. Must successfully complete a background investigation as condition of employment.

Highly desirable:

  • Certified Pool/Spa Operator
  • Certified Arborist through International Society of Arboriculture or Licensed Tree Trimmer through California Department of Consumer Affairs, Contractors State License Board
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector
  • Qualified Applicator License (pesticide)
  • Class B Driver's License with air brake and tanker endorsement
  • Certified Traffic Control Supervisor from the American Traffic Safety Services Association
  • Grade I Wastewater Collection System Certificate as issued by California Water Environment Association (CWEA)
