Description

The City of Dixon Fire Department is recruiting to fill three (3) vacancies at either level currently existing within the department.  This recruitment will also be used to establish a one-year eligibility list for future vacancies. 

To be considered eligible for this hiring and eligibility list, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Pass the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Entry Level Firefighter Written Exam and be placed on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List as of September 22, 2019.
  • Possess a current, valid Cal-JAC CPAT Card with an issue date between September 22, 2018 and September 22, 2019.
  • Possess a valid Firefighter 1 Academy certificate or California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Certificate.
  • Possess a current, valid California or National Registry EMT or Paramedic certification (note: persons possessing a National Registry Certification will be required to register as a California EMT-1 or Paramedic prior to appointment).
  • Valid California Class “C” Driver’s License with a clean driving record.

The Dixon Fire Department offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity for qualified applicants pursuing a career in fire safety.  The position performs fire prevention activities to save lives and property; responds to hazardous material incidents; responds to all fire alarms with designated company; prepares and operates the necessary equipment at the scene of the fire such as a hose, ladders, chemicals, bars, hooks, etc.; administers first aid to injured patrons; performs other acts required of a Firefighter at the scene of an emergency; carries out all duties assigned by Superior Officers.  Work involves irregular hours during the day and evenings, and on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

The final filing date has been established Sunday, September 22, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. On Monday, September 23, 2019 Dixon will pull a list from FCTC and if there are not enough sufficient applicants the recruitment will continue.

The most qualified candidates whose applications indicate that they, among those competing, are better qualified in terms of related training and experience will be considered.

FIRE FIGHTER

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of fire suppression and rescue equipment, tools and devices, and their proper use and maintenance requirements; of modern fire prevention and fire suppression methods, principles, practices and procedures; of work hazards and safety precautions associated with the work; and of first aid and CPR

Ability to learn the geography of the local area including the location of hydrants, mains; and major fire hazards; to understand and act in accordance with departmental policies and rules; to demonstrate a high degree of mechanical aptitude as required in the operation and maintenance of fire fighting and rescue equipment; to drive fire and rescue vehicles with care and safety in accordance with traffic laws and ordinances; to analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action; to think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies; to learn first aid principles and apply them, to learn technical fire fighting principles and techniques and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression.  Ability to keep simple records and prepare reports, to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and to meet the physical requirements established by the department.

Education/Experience:

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:

Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.  Related college level training is desirable.

Experience:

Some work experience performing fire fighting activities.  Completion of an eighteen month probation period as a Dixon Volunteer Firefighter is desirable.

Licenses, Certificates and/or Other Requirements:

The candidate shall be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.

Possess a valid Firefighter 1 Academy certificate.

Ability to possess and maintain an EMT-ID certificate.

Ability to possess and maintain a CPR certificate.

Ability to possess California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Certificate within six (6) months of initial hire.

A satisfactory driving record is a condition of initial and continued employment.

A Firefighter Class C Endorsement is desired, but not required.

 

FIRE FIGHTER/PARAMEDIC

Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of paramedic-level emergency medical care; applicable state and local laws, codes, regulations, and policies pertaining to paramedic-level emergency medical care; elementary physics, chemistry and mechanics; fire suppression and rescue equipment, tools and devices, and their proper use and maintenance requirements; of modern fire prevention and fire suppression methods, principles, practices and procedures; of work hazards and safety precautions associated with the work; and of first aid and CPR.

Possession of a current, valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support certificate issued by the American Heart Association or the equivalent. (Pediatric advanced life support & basic trauma life support or international trauma life support)

Ability to possess Solano County Paramedic Accreditation within three (3) months of initial hire.

A satisfactory driving record is a condition of initial and continued employment.

Within fifteen (15) months of employment, and as a condition for passing probation, incumbents must obtain Firefighter II Certification.

A Firefighter Class C Endorsement is desired, but not required.
