The Emeryville Police Department is a proactive, professional, public safety organization that prides itself on its interaction and support within the community. ABOUT THE POSITION

Police Officer Trainees shall attend a P.O.S.T certified police academy designed to provide an overview of the criminal justice system, training in various laws and procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid, physical fitness and related duties. Upon successful completion of the police academy, trainees enter the Emeryville Police Department field training program as a Police Officer and are assigned to the patrol division in a probationary status. 

Emeryville Police pride themselves on providing a level of service that is unsurpassed.  Each member of the department is expected to live up to a unique “Statement of Values.”  As a Police Officer, you will be responsible for a variety of law enforcement activities involving the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, prevention and investigation of crimes, and maintenance of order in a designated area during an assigned shift on foot, bicycle, motorcycle, or by patrol car.   Police Officers participate in 4/10 and 3/12 work-week schedules and must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays.  Police Officers have an 18-month probationary period which can be extended up to an additional three (3) months.   Officers are represented by the Emeryville Police Officers Association (EPOA).

Ideal Candidate

The minimum qualifications standards that must be met for consideration of this position: 

  • Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for, and has applied for, citizenship at least one year before making application for employment; 
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent with related college course work;
  • Must be at least 21 years of age by date of appointment;
  • Possess a valid California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record (an ongoing requirement);
  • Of good moral character;
  • Free of any felony convictions;
  • Corrected vision of in each eye to 20/30; normal color vision and hearing;
  • Free from any physical, emotional or medical condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.

Benefits

The MESA provides the following benefits package to Police Officer Trainees

·        Salary Range:  $4,859 to $5,101 monthly (while in Trainee status):

·        Health & Welfare:  Medical, dental, and vision care coverage paid by the agency (to a capped amount) for the employee and eligible dependents.

Upon graduation from the academy, the benefits package will include:

·        Salary Range:  $8,740 - $10,430 monthly (this range will be effective beginning 7/1/18)

·        Retirement:  Classic Members – 3% @ 55 (based on highest three consecutive years); Employee pays the 9% member contribution plus cost-sharing of 5%, totaling 14%.  New Members -- 2.7% @ 57 PERS Plan (based on highest three consecutive years). Employee pays the 12.25% member contribution. The City does not participate in Social Security.

·        Vacation:  0 – 4 years of service 2 weeks; 5 – 9 years of service 3 weeks; 10 – 20 years of service 4 weeks; 21+  years 5 weeks.

·        Holidays: Thirteen (13) paid holidays per year.

·        Sick Leave: Three (3) weeks per year, with unlimited accumulation.

·        Shift Differential:  4% for hours worked between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am.

·        Uniform Allowance: $1,200.00

·        Health & Welfare: Medical, dental, and vision care coverage paid by the agency (to a capped amount) for the employee and eligible dependents.

·        Misc. Benefits:  City provides life/AD&D, chiropractic and employee assistance program benefits.

·        Education Incentive: 3.5% and 6% dependent upon certification or college degree. 

Special Instructions

APPLICATION PROCESS

All applicants must complete the steps listed below.

  1. Submit a completed application online at www.calopps.org (paper applications will not be accepted), and
  2. Provide written test results -- EITHER of the following is acceptable:
    • PELLET-B - Attach to your application.  Applicants with a valid T-score of 45 or above from other jurisdictions may submit a letter on agency letterhead that states that individual has taken the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) written exam. The letter must contain the total T-score AND the date of the test; test dates older than six (6) months will not be accepted. Letters must be scanned and uploaded with your on-line application. POST T-scores and test dates will be verified with the California Commission on Police Officer Standards and Training.
      OR
    • National Testing Network (NTN) -- Schedule your law enforcement test at www.nationaltestingnetwork.com.  Once you complete your application on CalOpps, you will receive an email with details on how to complete the test with NTN.  NTN charges a $49 test fee, which you will pay directly to NTN.  You do not need to take NTN's physical agility test for this recruitment.  If you have tested with NTN within the last year, you may direct them to provide us with your test results.  You do NOT need to take the NTN test if you are submitting your valid T-Score.
