The Position

The Construction Inspector plays a key role in the Engineering Division of Public Works. The position is responsible for inspection of public streets, highways, bridges, City parks, and private developments. This entry-level position is characterized by the responsibility to learn and inspect public works construction projects for compliance with codes and specifications.

Examples of Job Responsibilities

  • Review construction plans, specifications, encroachment permits and other plans.
  • Conduct on-site inspection of construction materials, grade elevations, underground facilities, construction safety precautions, etc., to determine compliance with contract plans and specifications. Make field measurements.
  • Ensure conformance with applicable safety standards and regulations.
  • Monitor and document the correction of project deficiencies.
  • Identify and recommend approval of necessary contract and/or plan adjustments to accommodate field conditions.
  • Prepare daily reports, track contract timelines, and maintain field records on materials and quantities used. Investigate citizen complaints related to encroachment and/or grading violations.
  • Respond to public inquiries and concerns.
  • Other duties as assigned.
