Social Media Intern – Communications / City Clerk Department

Salary: $13.00- $25.00/hour

The City of Half Moon Bay will host an internship position within the Communications / City Clerk Department.

About the City

The City of Half Moon Bay is a Bay Area coastal community of approximately 12,500 residents and is located 25 miles south of San Francisco. The City is governed by a five-member elected City Council and utilizes the council-manager form of government. The City Council appoints a City Manager who is responsible for the oversight of daily operations and provides leadership for the City’s programs. The City currently employs 40 full-time employees in the following departments: City Manager’s Office, Communications / City Clerk, Administrative Services, Community Development, and Public Works. The City contracts Public Safety with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department.

The City and surrounding Coastside are a thriving agricultural, fishing, tourism, and recreational destination. There is a rich culture of diverse traditions and multi-generational families who have lived in Half Moon Bay for well over 100 years. In any given neighborhood, you will find farmers, high-tech entrepreneurs, and artists living amongst each other as one community.

About the Department

The Communications / City Clerk Department is seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated, and innovative individual interested in sharpening their communications skills in a municipal government setting. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in enhancing their knowledge and experience in city administration, local government, and community engagement. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to assist in outreach, digital media, and other communications initiatives. Through mentorship and under general supervision, the successful candidate will be responsible to complete specific projects and a variety of ongoing assignments to help develop their knowledge and skills. Some of the various projects and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with Social Media content and monitoring
  • Assist in the development of community outreach programs and events
  • Assist with elections and district election community meetings (planning and outreach)
  • Support the Communications Director /City Clerk and Communications Program Manager on numerous interdepartmental projects

Minimum Qualifications

This position is an internship meant for current or recently graduated college students. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities are qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be some completed college coursework with a major in Public Administration, Communications, Public Policy, or Business Administration.

Knowledge of:

  • Social Media Applications (Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor, Twitter)
  • Microsoft Office software (Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Adobe software (Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, and Photoshop)
  • Local government operations
