The City of Sausalito is seeking qualified candidates for the Position of

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Coordinator II – Aquatics Safety manages the City’s Aquatics lifeguards and scheduling, including lap swim, water-walking, lifeguard certification, community CPR/First Aid classes and JR Lifeguard program.  This position also supervises all lifeguards, senior lifeguards and provides key assistance to the Recreation Supervisor on all related matters (works closely with Recreation Coordinator I- Aquatics programs to support division goals and activities).

The Aquatics & Fitness Center is a 7-day a week operation.

Recreation Coordinator II schedule may include Saturdays and Sundays and is subject to change depending on facility and supervisor needs. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Recruit, hire, manage, train, schedule, audit, discipline and evaluate staff, contractors, interns, and volunteers.
• Schedule and provide regular in-service training for aquatics staff.
• Schedule and provide regular class and certification offerings necessary to staff for the proper operation of a public pool facility.
• Manage and develop the swim lesson program to balance and meet the needs of the community and the goals of the Department.
• Plan, develop and implement programs and events.
• Evaluate the progress and effectiveness of scheduling and programming utilizing measurable outcomes.
• Coordinate with local police and fire agencies for emergency response protocols.
• Assist in the development of policies, procedures, contracts, and manuals for facility users and staff.
• Work with local organizations, businesses, school personnel, parents, and community members in developing recreational programs and activities.
• Maintain all personal certifications and be available to lifeguard, teach swim lessons, and otherwise supplement line staff when needed.
• Provide assistance and guidance to facility users, anticipate and resolve problems, provide quality customer service.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

THE POSITION:     

Under the direction of the Pool Manager, the Assistant Pool Manager is responsible for assigned aquatic program areas, and acts as Pool Manager during the Pool Manager’s absence. The Assistant Manager assists in the direction and supervision of the staff and programs at the facility. This is an at-will, intermittent, part-time, hourly position. Work a flexible work schedule, which may include evening, weekdays, weekends and holidays

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Acts as Pool Manager in the absence of same.
• Assist with pool staff assignments and scheduling.
• Perform lifesaving practices and standards according to accepted industry standards.
• Assist with training and supervision of staff and volunteers on assigned duties.
• Meet program goals and objectives, collect and maintain relevant statistical records and data.
• Acts in capacity of pool lifeguard.
• Assist in maintaining on-site security and safety of participants, staff, and others in the pool area, preparation and maintenance of incident records.
• Assist in organization, teaching and evaluation of swim lessons and pool activities.
• Enforce City and program rules and guidelines.
• Assist Pool Manager to monitor correct completion of required paperwork.
• Attend pertinent staff meetings as required during the season.
• Perform other program-related duties as assigned.

Under direct supervision of the Pool Supervisor, The Lifeguard has the responsibility to enforce the safety standards, rules, and regulations of the City’s Pool program; to rescue swimmers in distress and administer First Aid and CPR when it is needed; This position includes ensuring the safety of all pool patrons, be alert of all activities in and around the pool while on duty and to assist with general maintenance and cleanup activities and performs related work as required.  Work is performed in a swimming facility environment, with frequent contact with City staff and the public.  Multiple Lifeguard positions are available.

Tact and diplomacy; dependability; maturity; sufficient to assume the responsibility of protecting the lives of others; willingness to conform to prescribed uniform standards.  Unique physical characteristics include – physical strength, endurance, and agility necessary to perform lifesaving activities; visual acuity and hearing in each ear are sufficient to complete the job's essential functions.  Must be observant, friendly, helpful, enthusiastic, responsible, and work well in a team.  Must pass a general background check and fingerprinting to determine suitability for working with children.

Pre-Requisites (Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:)

1. 1. Lifeguard I – Completion of the 10th grade (Must be at Least 16 Years Old) and possession of advanced lifesaving or water safety Instructor’s Certificate.  Valid Driver’s License. American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate.  American Red Cross First Aid (either multi-media, standard, or advanced).  American Red Cross or American Heart of Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate. 

1. 2. Lifeguard II – Graduation from high school and/or GED and experience as a lifeguard and possessing advanced lifesaving or water safety Instructor’s Certificate.  Valid Driver’s License. American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate.  American Red Cross First Aid (either multi-media, standard, or advanced).  American Red Cross or American Heart of Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate.   

Under the general direction of the Deputy Director of Recreation and Community Engagement, the Pool Supervisor oversees the day-to-day operations, maintenance, and administration of the aquatic facility. Responsibilities include but are not limited to enforcing policies and procedures which ensure the efficient and effective operation of pool facilities, including personnel management and training. Duties involve all swimming pool operations, including first aid, rotations, scheduling for Staff, public relations, and light janitorial duties. Collect entrance fees, authorization forms, and logs as required. Provide Lifeguard services when needed.

American Red Cross or American Heart of Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR/AED) Certificate is Preferred. If the applicant is not certified and would like to be, the City of Chowchilla would pay for the training classes required as long as certification is obtained before the swim season begins.

   3. Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Preferred 

SWIM INSTRUCTOR/LIFEGUARD

$17.50 to $19.29 per hour

This position is not eligible for City benefits other than those mandated by Federal and State Law

Position is Seasonal Part-time for the 2024 Summer season

Summary Description

Under the direction of the Pool Manager, organizes and instructs swim classes, maintains records and documentation involved with instruction classes, monitors swimmers in the pool area, enforcing pool rules and regulations, preventing accidents and rescuing swimmers in distress during public swim sessions. This is an at-will, intermittent, part-time, hourly position without City-paid benefits.  Some evening and weekend work may be required.

Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Conduct all levels of swim instruction and water safety lessons for participants from ages six months to adult.
2. Assist in curriculum instruction planning and pre-registration program to assess participants’ ability levels.
3. Patrol and monitor aquatics facility, watch for accidents and hazards in the pool areas; enforce rules.
4. Responsible for following accepted lifesaving practices and standards including the administering of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), O2 and First Aid as needed.
5. Assist with facility operations, aquatics competitions and special events throughout the year, including setup and cleanup.
6. Assist with desk reception, telephone support and related customer service activities; accepts registrations, collect fees and process receipts on a City computer.
7. Responsible for meeting all program goals and objectives.
8. Complete accurate reports and documentation of accidents and incidents in pool and pool area.
9. Attend scheduled staff meetings.
10. Assist with routine pool cleaning and maintenance as needed.
11. Responsible for maintaining a safe and clean swimming pool environment.
12. Responsible for maintaining personal fitness sufficient to perform the required duties.
13. Perform other position-related duties designated by the Pool Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Minimum Requirement:

Work Permit may be required if under the age of 18

Possess current and valid certificates from American Red Cross in First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Lifeguard Training which must be maintained throughout employment.

Prior experience working with age appropriate groups desirable.

Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of lifeguarding and water safety.

Effective lifesaving techniques.

Advanced and basic swimming strokes, methods and procedures of swimming pool operations.

Effective teaching techniques and practices

Ability to:

Maintain a flexible work schedule, which may include evenings, weekdays, weekends and holidays.

Act quickly, calmly and appropriately in emergency situations; perform lifesaving and rescue activities, including administering CPR, O2 and First Aid.

Convey and instruct the curriculum skills outlined in the aquatics program to children and adults.

Exercise judgement, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving a variety of pre-defined duties subject to frequent change.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with internal and external customers and staff.

Learn pertinent City rules, policies, ordinances and program requirements.

Maintain timely and accurate reports pertinent to the aquatics program.

Learn basic pool chemistry.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work.

Education/Training:

Demonstrated swimming skills that meet the American Red Cross guidelines for aquatics program personnel.

Experience:

Ability to read and write at a level necessary for acceptable job performance, including the ability to follow and to interpret written instructions and to perform basic arithmetic.

Prior experience working with age-appropriate groups preferred.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid ID.

Possession of valid certificates from American Red Cross in Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid; Water Safety Instructor certificate is desirable.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Must possess current Lifeguard Certification, which includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Lifeguard First Aid.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and react quickly to emergencies.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS: Candidates receiving a conditional job offer must pass a pre-placement fingerprint review. Candidates must be comfortable calling 911 in an emergency and providing care according to the level of training.
