These are seasonal positions, limited to 1,000 hours worked within a fiscal year (July 1 thru June 30) that receive no City benefits.  Job training is anticipated to begin in mid-April with employment lasting through September.  Shifts will average 8 hours per day/4-5 days per week.  This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience working for one of the finest departments in the State.

This position is fully funded through the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority (MPWA) and will directly support the mission of wildfire preparedness and mitigation, and community safety.

The City of San Rafael Fire Department is seeking customer service and public safety focused individuals to join the wildfire mitigation team. Under supervision, inspectors will perform a variety of wildfire prevention duties with a focus on one-on-one education via property evaluations.  The Inspector’s efforts will support resident compliance with City and State Fire codes.

The customer-service oriented positions will support the City’s and Marin Wildfire Fire Prevention Authorities (MWPA)’s goals. The ideal candidate will be able to connect and inspire individual action among our diverse community by explaining complex concepts in easy-to-understand ways.  Inspectors will utilize tablets and other technology to document findings and interactions in the field.Our highly qualified candidate will be able to work effectively in small teams or independently and clearly communicate wildfire safety-related information to residents from various backgrounds.  We are looking for people who have sound judgment and can communicate effectively with others.  They will need to be able to follow both verbal and written instructions, engage effectively with the public and work harmoniously with our team. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but are not limited to the following).     

• Perform defensible space inspections in accordance with San Rafael Municipal Code 4.12.
• Investigates public and referred public agency complaints.
• Provide guidance to residents on suggested and required home hardening strategies.
• Provide residents with appropriate support resources and programs.
• Increase awareness, knowledge and actins implemented by individuals and communities to reduce human loss and property damage from wildfires.
• Reviews, evaluates, processes, and maintains a variety of files related to fire prevention activities.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

• Communicate clearly and respectfully to residents and stakeholders.
• Learn and apply City and State Fire Codes and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
• Provide clear and concise written reports free of grammar and spelling errors.
• Utilize personal computers, tablets, and related software including the Microsoft Office Suite, mapping, and database tools.
• Independently conduct fire (defensible space) inspections.
• Apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques.
• Be self-motivated, work independently to complete assigned duties and responsibilities in a timely manner.
• Interpret and explain fire prevention services, policies and procedures.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with stake holders to ensure that assigned fire prevention coordination efforts are successful.

Minimum Qualifications Desired:

• In accordance with State legal requirements, applicant must be at least 18 years old by the application filing deadline.
• Completion of twelfth (12th) grade and any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities in qualifying.
• Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
• A background in customer service or public service.
• Ability to speak, write, and read Spanish.

Disaster Service Workers:

All City of San Rafael employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109).  Employment at the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect.  Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

COUNSELOR

CAMP KUGA:  (June 26 – June 30)

Camp Kuga is a joint effort of the San Rafael Police Department, Marin County Sheriff’s Department and Marin County Office of Education designed to provide a positive outdoor experience for at-risk and low-income youth of San Rafael and unincorporated Marin County. Children are between the ages of 11 – 13.  The program seeks to create and foster rapport between children and peace officers in a personal and relaxed setting as well as teach, mentor, and role model healthy minds, healthy emotions, and healthy bodies. WalkerCreek naturalists and CampChance counselors (18 and over) will also provide assistance with CampChance.

COMPENSATION:

Salary is $18.23 - $19.14 per hour.  Room and board will be provided, and counselors will have many opportunities to expand their leadership skills.

DATES OF EMPLOYMENT:  Training days are June (dates TBD) followed by Camp Kuga which is June 26 – June 30.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide supervision for 8 - 12 campers, ages 11 - 13, at a residential camp that brings first-responders (police, fire search and rescue) together with children.  Assist naturalists during lessons, recreational activities, waterfront activities, evening programs and a beach field trip.  Provide guidance and leadership to ensure safety and overall well-being of campers.  Provide direction to counselors-in-training (CIT’s) who function as support staff for the program.  Assist with meal supervision, set-ups, and clean-ups.

DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be at least 18 years of age by May 1, 2023 and have graduated from high school by June 15, 2023. 
• Current CPR and first aid certification or willingness to obtain before position begins.
•  Experience working with children and enjoy being outside.  
• Recreational leadership skills such as canoeing and fishing; music, and theatrical and/or artistic abilities are also desirable. 
• Conversational Spanish skills are desirable.

THE LOCATION:

Walker Creek Ranch is located amongst the rolling hills of beautiful MarinCounty in a partially wooded valley created by a meandering creek.  The site is approximately 50 miles north of San Francisco and 18 miles west of historical downtown Petaluma. Our “outdoor classroom” includes bay woodlands, grasslands, coastal scrub chaparral, streams, a four-acre swimming pond, a low elements challenge course, an observatory and 20 miles of hiking trails.  Limantour Beach is a short distance away and may be visited.

THE WEATHER:

The weather at Walker Creek Ranch can be variable.  During the evening, coastal fog is typical and generally burns by off mid-morning the following day.  Afternoons are warm with cooling coastal breezes.  Packing lists will be provided to selected applicants.

Sausalito Parks and Recreation is Seeking Vibrant Skilled Recreation Leaders

This recruitment is for Spring and Summer Events and Activities such as Bocce Referee, Jazz and Blues Event Staff, Fourth of July Event Staff, and other fun classes, activities, and events

Pay: $15.00/ Hr.

The City of Sausalito is recruiting for part-time temporary help for the spring and summer seasonal recreation activities and City-wide events.  The first of these is the Bocce League referee.

Bocce Referee
As a Sausalito Parks and Recreation Bocce Referee, you are responsible for set-up, management, and cleanup of scheduled Bocce matches. You are the enforcer of rules, an impartial judge, and an advocate for fun and fair play. The ideal candidate will maintain a positive attitude and provide a friendly environment when communicating with teams and keeping score. This position reports directly to the Recreation Supervisor.   The ideal candidate must meet all minimum requirements as listed below and be confident and capable of dealing with conflict and intense games. 

To be considered for this position, you must be available for the entirety of the season:

• Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, March 7 – May 20, 5:00p.m. – 8:15 p.m. 
• Saturday, May 6 & May 20, 10:00 – 5:00 p.m.
• Commit to 3-hour shifts on Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday for 12 weeks and one Saturday

Event Staff

As a Sausalito Parks and Recreation Event Staff member, you are responsible for actively participating in set-up, cleanup, and management of your assigned event.  You must arrive on time and remain until the event leader release you after the event.   Event staff may set up chairs, tables, stages, corridors, and barriers.  You may be asked to perform traffic control or direct drivers to parking.   The ideal candidate will have a can-do attitude, smile often, meet all of the minimum requirements below, remain calm under pressure and in the face of adversity, be cheerful, and love the diversity of people. 

The minimum requirements for the position are:

• Reliable transportation to and from games or events
• Ability and commitment to arrive on time and remain until duties are completed and you are released
• Confidence and capability to manage conflict with grace and calm
• Commitment to long hours, days, evenings, or on weekends depending on the assigned event schedule
• Must be 14 years of age or older with a work permit if under 16. 
• Able to work independently
• Excellent people skills
• Strong ability to follow directions.
• Ability to lift and carry 25lbs
