This Internship is offered as part of a Regional Internship Partnership to introduce and encourage new graduates to local municipal governments. The Town of Los Altos Hills hopes that internships like this will serve as a platform to connect a diverse student population with agencies that recognize their value and provide important opportunities for applicants to bring fresh ideas while gaining valuable hands-on experience in the public sector.

The Town of Los Altos Hills has five rewarding, non-benefitted summer internships to begin June 10, 2024 through August 30, 2024.

Job Description: 

The intern’s workload will be a balance of assisting in daily municipal operations and special projects. Duties may include, but are not limited to proof reading, poster design, grassroots marketing, implementing events, organization of record management, benchmarking, photographing activities and research. The position will serve as a regular staff member and will receive assignments and work direction from the Community Services Supervisor. The primary goal of the internship program is to provide a college student or recent graduate an opportunity to apply their academic training in a municipal government setting. This paid internship provides hands-on experience in the daily operations of municipal government on all levels, thus enhancing the intern’s skills and résumé for a future profession in government.

Qualifications:

• Current Undergraduate College Student or Bachelor’s degree in Community Services/Recreation or related fields
• Knowledge of principles and practices of organization and recreation
• Interest in local government
• Strong oral & written communication skills
• High level of computer skills
• Effective interpersonal skills as well as the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public
• Applicable previous experience
• Self-motivated

THE POSITION:  Assist staff attorneys in providing a wide range of professional legal services to City departments, City Council, and various boards and commissions.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  
•    Law School Student

TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS: The primary projects will most likely include the following: 
•    Perform legal research and prepare memos on various legal issues for City departments, the City Council, and various boards and commissions.
•    Assist with preparing and drafting ordinances, resolutions, administrative policies, contracts, deeds, leases and other legal documents and instruments; assist with reviewing such documents and offering opinions regarding legal compliance when presented to the City for consideration by an outside agency.
•    Assist with investigation of claims and complaints against the City and recommend action to be taken.
•    Assist the attorneys with preparing cases for administrative hearings. 
•    Assist in responding to citizen complaints and requests for information.
•    Assist attorneys acting as staff counsel to the Planning Commission, Personnel Board, and other boards and commissions.
•    Assist in the preparation of cases for small claims court.

In addition, the intern may work on a variety of other projects depending upon their time and interests.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is recruiting an undergraduate or graduate-level City Administration College Intern for the summer of 2024. This internship will provide a significant opportunity to gain experience and exposure and accumulate skills that are used daily in various city government programs that make substantial impacts to the community. These programs are in the areas of the City Clerks office, emergency management, economic development, public information and outreach, and other municipal administration programs and services.
 
The City Administration Intern will perform a variety of functions under the direction of the City Administrator and supervision of the Assistant to the City Administrator.

VOLUNTEER WORK SCHEDULE 
Internships can start as early as May 31, 2024 and end as late as September 30, 2024. 
 
This paid internship is offered at 15 - 25 hours per week with flexible scheduling. The selected Intern may request a schedule of their choice during standard work hours as described below. The office start and end date of the internship will be determined at the time of hire. Work hours are generally Monday – Friday between 8:00am – 5:00pm.
