THE POSITION

The Community Development Department is seeking enthusiastic and customer-service oriented candidates for the position of Permit Technician.

Under general supervision, the Permit Technician will perform specialized work associated with the processing of building permits and clerical work involving a substantial degree of judgment and initiative; and to do related work as required. This class is assigned to the Building Inspection Division of the Community Development Department.

Typical Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Receives and processes permit applications;

The Technology Services Librarian will have primary responsibility for overseeing all in-house technology in the Downtown Library and Weekes Branch, including: 
 

• Coordinating the Library’s Makerspace, Digital Media Lab, and Public Computer Lab, including providing tech support to public and staff computers.  
• Serving as the liaison to the City IT department 
• Working with library vendors to curate and manage the library’s e-resources, including e-books and databases.  
• Supervising staff assigned to the Tech Lab, Makerspace, Digital Media Lab, and Public Computer Lab.

 Librarian II: Marketing and Outreach:
 

The Marketing and Outreach Librarian will have primary responsibility for overseeing the library’s Outreach Division, which includes:  

 

• Coordinating the library’s bookmobile and techmobile services, and community hub.  
• Coordinating library marketing, including social media, newsletters, and the library’s website.  
• Coordinating off-site and on-site programming and collaboration requests.  
• Serving as the liaison to the City’s Publicity/PR Department 
• Supervising staff assigned to outreach services.

Librarian II: Education Services:
 

The Education Services Librarian II will have primary responsibility for coordinating the library’s Education Services Division, which includes:  

 

• Program development and implementation of cradle to senior programs in collaboration with community partners.  
• Early childhood development programming, K-12 after-school support programs, adult literacy, summer programming, and citizenship programming.  
• Serving as a liaison to schools and institutions of higher learning.  
• Overseeing multiple federal and state grants.  
• Supervising staff assigned to the Education Services division.  
• Serving as manager in charge in the absence of senior managers.

What you will do:  

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
 
Plans, organizes, directs and coordinates the functions of a major service area of the library.

Makes recommendations on selection and withdrawal of books, periodicals, display materials, and audio or video or e-materials by reading reviews, and other sources, and keeping up with current trends and making recommendations to the Director of Library Services.
 
Performs reference and readers advisory work in person, by telephone or other communication means, by verifying the patrons' needs through the reference interview process, and answering questions or exploring alternative sources of information such as other resources, agencies and libraries.

Updates factual material and coordinates loan services with other libraries. Assesses technology needs, evaluates system needs and makes recommendations for purchasing or improving equipment and programs based on current industry standards.
 
Serves as a liaison to the IT department for testing and supporting computer devices, library software, and infrastructure needs; provides basic technical assistance to library staff and patrons; and plans technology related training and programming for staff and the public.
 
Independently performs complex cataloging and classification review and related activities as assigned.
 
Directs or participates in community programs such as library tours for community groups, special programs for children and adults including technology services and on-site visits to the library.
 
Attends job-related meetings such as weekly staff meetings, Bay Area Library Information Systems meetings and/or other area meetings.
 
Prepares and submits performance evaluations on staff.

Prepares and submits timely and informative reports on projects as needed, including recommendations regarding resources and budgetary needs.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Community Development department is responsible for ensuring a sustainable and vibrant community that supports a high quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors. It includes the Building, Planning and Housing divisions, and core services include building permits, plan check, inspections, affordable housing administration and housing initiatives, as well as long-range planning and development review. The Building Division is responsible for managing the building permit, plan check and inspection processes for compliance with all applicable State laws, local municipal codes and related policies involving building construction, which requires a high level of customer service with the public and coordination within and across departments and agencies.

THE POSITION

The Building Official oversees the development of programs, projects, operations, and services of the Building Division, and is a part of the Community Development management team. This position will manage a 13-member team, including a Permit Manager, Building Permit Technicians, Plan Check Engineer, and Building Inspectors, and will receive general direction from the Assistant Community Development Director or the Community Development Director. Successful performance in this role requires professional and technical skills in the core functional areas of permitting, plan checking and building inspections, as well as knowledge of public policy and municipal services, and excellence in communication and leadership. The individual must be able to assess the current needs of the department and look for innovative ways to help the department advance to improve service delivery and meet the changing needs of the community. This will require guiding modifications to the City’s land management permitting system (Accela) to improve processes, enhance customer service and monitor data.

With the adoption of the General Plan Update in 2016 and, most recently, the Housing Element zoning-related changes, the City is expected to see physical change as plans come to fruition. A key priority for this position will be overseeing the building permit process for a diverse range of projects from tenant improvements to new single-family residential construction to hotels to large-scale, comprehensive planned mixed-use campuses. Currently, the City has approximately 775 residential units and 260,000 square feet of life science uses under construction, with over 2,000 residential units, two hotels and more than 1.8 million square feet of commercial square footage approved, but not yet under construction, along with a number of large development projects currently under review. The City of Sunnyvale is seeking a Building Inspector to provide building construction inspections. Depending on the applicant qualifications, the position will be filled at the appropriate level/salary of either a Building Inspector I or Building Inspector II.
