Per Diem Library Assistant I (Circulation Services)

THE POSITION: The San Mateo Public Library is seeking energetic individuals to provide a wide variety of library support work. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Assisting at the Accounts Desk; checking out and checking in of library materials; registering patrons for library cards; financial transactions at the Accounts Desk; promoting library services and providing consistent, excellent customer service. This recruitment is for two 19-hour Per Diem Library Assistant I positions that support Circulation services at each of the three San Mateo Public Library locations. An eligibility list will be created for future openings in this classification.  This recruitment will also be used to fill several on-call Library Assistant positions*.

SALARY AND HOURS:  $27.11 per hour (Step 1). Below are the starting schedules for the Per Diem Library Assistant I positions that may be changed in the future to meet the operational needs of the Library. These positions are currently scheduled at all three San Mateo Public Library locations, Main, Marina, and Hillsdale branches.  Availability at all three San Mateo Public Library branches is required.

• Thursday:  5-8pm Main

• Sunday:  Off
• Monday:  12-5pm Marina
• Tuesday:  Off
• Wednesday:  Off
• Thursday:  3-8pm Main
• Fri: 10-2pm Marina
• Sat:  12-5pm Hillsdale
• Total Hours:  19

*Schedule #2 and On-Call positions require a Sunday shift every two-month period

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by clerical and specialized college level courses in library science; or, one year of experience performing general clerical or related work in a public library system; bilingual skills desirable but not required; strong customer service skills are required.

ABILITY TO: Work with a minimum of supervision, follow written and oral instructions; work cooperatively in a team environment.

ADA SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Perform physical tasks such as lifting and moving library materials; push, lift, and/or pull 40 pounds; sit; stand; walk; kneel; stoop; squat; reach; twist; exposure to chemicals and dust.

Lifeguard

Swim Instructor

Under general supervision, the Swim Instructor performs swim instructor duties in planning, coordinating and teaching swimming and water safety courses, enforcing City public swimming pool rules and monitoring pool patron conduct.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Lifeguard

• Enforce swimming pool rules and regulations, including ensuring orderly conduct by pool patrons.
• Assist in providing instruction for a variety of swimming classes for all ages and ability levels. Assist swimmers who are in distress and administer a variety of first aid and/or life saving techniques, as appropriate.
• Assist in maintaining pool areas in a safe and clean condition.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Swim Instructor

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Park Ranger Assistant provides information and assistance to the public and enforces laws, rules and regulations (including sections of the Fremont Municipal Code) pertaining to park and recreation facilities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (This is a general description of duties and is not all-inclusive)

• Responsible for patrol and general supervision of Central Park and its recreation facilities and picnic areas
• Give information and provide assistance to the public acting as a City of Fremont liaison
• As a Public Officer, may enforce the Fremont Municipal Code within the park system including issuing citations
• Knowledgeable of the rules, regulations and ordinances of the City of Fremont park operations
• Maintain continual radio communication with other staff
• Provide traffic and parking control as needed
• Provide emergency animal services
• Conduct historical and natural history interpretive programs for children and adults
• Responsible for patrol/supervision of other facilities/ parks throughout Fremont as needed
• Perform minor maintenance work on equipment and facilities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be at least 18 years old; Over 21 preferred
• Must possess and retain a valid class C California Driver's License
• Willingness to comply with suspected child abuse reporting (11166.5 PC)
• Employees are required to be certified in Adult/Child CPR & First Aid from American Red Cross, American Heart Association or supervisor approved equivalent. Employees must be certified within 30 days of hire date or prior to the first day of work, whichever occurs earlier.
• Fingerprinting and negative TB test results are required
• Must submit verification of legal right to work in the United States as a condition of employment
• Must have ability to pass a physical examination
• All candidates must meet the following physical requirements:
  • Swim 50 yards without stopping
  • Sit or stand for long periods of time (90% of assigned shift, possibly in excess of 10 hours)
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs
  • Ability to lift and maneuver at least 50 pounds
  • Ability to be active for the entire work shift
  • Ability to bend, kneel, stoop, push, and pull
  • Vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Be able to ride a bicycle
• Be able to work outdoors in wet conditions and extreme heat and direct sunlight
• Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required
• Ability to establish/maintain productive relations and positive attitude toward others
• Ability to provide outstanding customer service while performing assigned duties, including interpreting and conveying information throughout Central Park
• Supervise public use to enhance recreation activities and insure safe and legal use
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Possess above average organizational skills and be able to multitask
• Possess above average written and oral communication skills
• Maintain a high degree of confidentiality in performing all aspects of assigned responsibilities
• Respond to emergencies in a timely and safe manner and produce competent reports of incidents and injuries
• Recognize hazardous situations and contain area until help arrives and assist other City departments in the event of major emergencies

SELECTION PROCESS

Qualified application will be evaluated on the basis of related experience and quality of presentation.

The most highly qualified applicants will be invited to an oral interview. Applicant evaluations may include a written and physical test. Satisfactory candidates will be placed on an eligibility list. Placements are anticipated immediately after the list is established. Some placements may be assigned to emphasize public education as the City's needs require.

Vaccination Status: The City of Fremont requires new employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 absent an approved medical or religious exemption as a condition of employment. All new hires will be required to provide proof of vaccination to Human Resources upon final job offer. If an individual is in the process of being vaccinated, their start date may be adjusted to a future date after they have been fully vaccinated. In general, an individual is considered fully vaccinated 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson's Janssen vaccine. THE POSITION

The main job of a Library Page is putting books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines back on the shelves and preparing the library for opening and closing. The ability to quickly and accurately sort things alphabetically and numerically is required. This is an ideal job for someone who enjoys organizing and who can work quietly on their own.

DEFINITION

Under supervision, sorts, shelves, straightens, relocates, and searches for library materials, re-orders and organizes materials as needed, provides basic directional information to patrons, performs basic circulation duties using computer software, performs physical tasks to support library programs and procedures, performs closing procedures, and does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Sorts and shelves materials, assists at public service desks; inspects materials for wear and damage and does basic mending of same; keeps books and periodical shelves in order; assists in taking inventory of books; performs basic custodial tasks as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 Knowledge of: Basic clerical functions, principles of alphabetical and numerical filing, basic record keeping procedures.

Ability to: Sort material quickly and accurately in alphabetic or numeric order; follow oral and written directions; interact positively and cooperate with co-workers, respond politely to library patrons, work as a team member, function under demanding time pressure, respond in a positive manner to supervision, and attend work and perform duties on a regular and consistent basis.

Must be physically able to stand for extended periods, walk, bend, kneel, push wheeled carts, lift, reach overhead, go up and down stairs, and use a step stool.

Availability for evening and Saturday shifts is required.

Age: Minimum age of sixteen.
