Per Diem Library Assistant I (Circulation Services)
THE POSITION: The San Mateo Public Library is seeking energetic individuals to provide a wide variety of library support work. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Assisting at the Accounts Desk; checking out and checking in of library materials; registering patrons for library cards; financial transactions at the Accounts Desk; promoting library services and providing consistent, excellent customer service. This recruitment is for two 19-hour Per Diem Library Assistant I positions that support Circulation services at each of the three San Mateo Public Library locations. An eligibility list will be created for future openings in this classification. This recruitment will also be used to fill several on-call Library Assistant positions*.
SALARY AND HOURS: $27.11 per hour (Step 1). Below are the starting schedules for the Per Diem Library Assistant I positions that may be changed in the future to meet the operational needs of the Library. These positions are currently scheduled at all three San Mateo Public Library locations, Main, Marina, and Hillsdale branches. Availability at all three San Mateo Public Library branches is required.
Circulation Services: Per Diem Library Assistant I, schedule #1
- Sunday: 11-3 Main
- Monday: 4-8pm Main
- Tuesday: 12-5pm Hillsdale
- Wednesday: Off
- Thursday: 5-8pm Main
- Fri: Off
- Sat: 10-1pm Main
- Total Hours: 19
Circulation Services: Per Diem Library Assistant I, schedule #2*
- Sunday: Off
- Monday: 12-5pm Marina
- Tuesday: Off
- Wednesday: Off
- Thursday: 3-8pm Main
- Fri: 10-2pm Marina
- Sat: 12-5pm Hillsdale
- Total Hours: 19
*Schedule #2 and On-Call positions require a Sunday shift every two-month period
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by clerical and specialized college level courses in library science; or, one year of experience performing general clerical or related work in a public library system; bilingual skills desirable but not required; strong customer service skills are required.
ABILITY TO: Work with a minimum of supervision, follow written and oral instructions; work cooperatively in a team environment.
ADA SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Perform physical tasks such as lifting and moving library materials; push, lift, and/or pull 40 pounds; sit; stand; walk; kneel; stoop; squat; reach; twist; exposure to chemicals and dust.
