The Position

The County is a diverse and dynamic community spanning a wide range of urban, suburban, rural, and coastal settings throughout the unincorporated community.

The Assistant Building Official leads building inspection activities to provide excellent customer service and to ensure development meets life safety, fire, structural, and energy efficiency standards.

Under the direction of the Building Official, the Assistant Building Official will assist in planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating the direction of the Building Inspection unit in the Planning and Building Department; exercise direct and indirect supervision over professional and technical staff; act as the Building Official in their absence; and perform a variety of technical tasks related to assigned areas of responsibility.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assist the Building Official in planning, organizing, directing and evaluating the administration and technical direction of the Building Inspection unit.
• Select, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of building counter and field inspection personnel; plan and coordinate in-house and field staff training and development programs; and recommend or initiate personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, dismissals, and disciplinary measures.
• Assign work activities and projects; conduct periodic field inspections to monitor workflow and ensure conformance with approved plans, specifications, ordinances, laws and materials; and conduct more difficult building and housing inspections.
• Investigate and resolve complaints or difficult interactions in the field regarding requirements or customer service; and assist in analyzing and solving administrative, office, and technical problems.
• Evaluate and review new or specialized construction practices and provide recommendations to the Chief Building Official.
• Assist staff with technical questions at the building counter.
• Serve as Acting Building Official in their absence.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

Education:

Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in construction, civil engineering, architecture, public administration, management, or a related field. Occupational experience and related certificates of achievement may be accepted as evidence of required training. Additional training in management is highly desirable.

Experience:

Five years of increasingly responsible experience in building code inspection and enforcement, engineering and surveying, or code compliance, including one year of supervisory experience.

Licensure/Certification:

• ICC (International Code Council) Certification as a Combination Inspector or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire. (Per California Health and Safety Code Section 18949.28(a).)
• Registered as a Certified Access Specialist (CASp) by the State of California or ability to become registered within one (1) year of hire.
• ICC certified as a Plans Examiner is highly desirable.

The City of Sunnyvale’s Department of Public Works is recruiting for two Senior Maintenance Worker positions within the Street Operations division. One Senior Maintenance Worker position will be assigned to the pavement team responsible for maintenance, repair, sweeping and cleaning of City streets, curbs, gutters, and similar right-of-way infrastructure. One Senior Maintenance Worker position will be assigned to the traffic markings and signs team responsible for a variety of tasks involving installing and maintaining traffic signs, painting pavement markings and striping, and repairing concrete sidewalk for the city. This classification reports to a Public Works Supervisor and receives assignments related to the above-mentioned maintenance tasks.

Salary $38.08 - $48.60 Hourly

Hours: Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Varying shifts are available including Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Under general supervision, individuals assigned to this classification assist the organization to develop and design reports, websites, social media collateral and other marketing and presentation materials. This classification focuses on the development of written and graphic representation for division or department materials. Individuals in this classification are primarily focused on enhancing the Division’s social media presence, developing all written material, performing administrative tasks, attending fairs and events to promote Recreation Services programs; and perform/ related work as required.

This position is characterized by developing new and innovative marketing collateral with limited structure or routine work. Work assignments are performed in collaboration with various divisions and levels of staff, independently, with responsibility for following through on development. Contacts are regularly made both internally and externally at all levels of the organization involving tact, discretion, good listening and customer service skills. The position requires creative ability, knowledge of how to generate graphics using The Adobe Suite, Canva, Microsoft Publisher, Word and Excel and the ability to exercise a reasonable degree of independent judgment. This classification assists with development and implementation of standards for consistency in materials, written and posted on the internet. Additionally, the position requires good written communication skills, public relations, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills and abilities. The Marketing Associate receives direction from program supervisors and management staff.

Essential Job Functions

(May include, but are not limited to, the following):

• Design and produce effective collateral for digital and print to promote programs, events and services
• Design and produce graphics materials using computer-based and traditional methods to meet organizational standards and deadlines
• Produce highly creative work within an established organizational style
• Edit electronic newsletter articles and blurbs, program descriptions for activity guide/fliers/online descriptions and social media posts
• Follow all City standards related to branding and writing (Associated Press style), or as otherwise directed, and meet deadlines
• Develop written content and edit for brochures, reports, logos and other marketing and presentation materials
• Consult with City staff and provide technical coaching and training to colleagues
• Participate in the planning, development and production of written and graphics materials
• Assist staff in the development of presentations using PowerPoint and other presentation software
• Create, develop and monitor posts and comments for social media accounts
• Represent the division at community outreach events (such as fairs, special events, etc.) by promoting community services programs and services

WORKING CONDITIONS
Position is required to work on the Community Center campus and may not work from home. Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination when using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision when reading and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. The need to lift, push and pull files, paper and documents weighing up to 25 pounds also is required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

• A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in marketing, communications, graphic arts or a closely related field; AND

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is completion of 60 college semester units. Previous volunteer or paid experience in a law enforcement support area is desirable.
 
Other requirements include:

• Must be free from any disqualifications for employment, including felony convictions.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
• Must be 21 years of age or older at time of appointment.
• Must be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose a criminal record.

EXAM PROCESS

Applicants may waive the written exam only by submitting a California POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) T-score of 48 points or higher. We will accept California POST T-scores from other agencies provided the test was taken no more than one year prior to the date of application. Applicants must submit, on agency letterhead, a letter that states that the individual has taken the California PELLETB written exam. The City of Berkeley invites applications for the position of Housing Inspector II (Certified)! In this role, you will perform skilled inspection work with City residential housing inspection programs. You will independently perform the full scope of work in the investigation, reporting and follow-up of housing deficiencies to gain compliance with housing, building, zoning, fire, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and related codes and regulations.

Assignments are varied and generally require close interaction with the public, providing information and interpretation of applicable ordinances, codes and regulations. Equivalent to graduation from high school and at least two years of full-time experience equivalent to Housing Inspector or Building Inspector or Code Enforcement Inspector for a public agency.

• An International Code Council (ICC) OR California (CA) certification in Residential Building or Housing Inspection or in Code Enforcement; and
• ICC or CA Residential or Commercial Electrical Inspector certification and ICC or CA Residential or Commercial Plumbing Inspector certification, or equivalent ICC or CA Legacy Certification for either Combination Inspector or Combination Dwelling Inspector.

Other requirements: Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, incumbent is required to maintain a valid California driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record.

The Department

The Human Services Department (HSD) delivers and supports services by forging long-term community partnerships; engaging with and building the capacity of the community to do its own problem- solving; and leveraging financial and volunteer resources.  The Aging and Family Services Division (AFS) of HSD specifically supports older residents and their caregivers to live active, healthy lives in the Tri-City community.

The Position

As a member of the HSD assigned to the AFS, the Senior Program Coordinator will organize, coordinate, and implement community wellness programs for older adults. The Community Programs include health promotion activities such as health screenings, wellness classes, and educational activities. POSITION

The City Clerk plans, organizes, and directs all functions and responsibilities of the City Clerk's office as specified by the City Council and as required by law.  This is an exempt Management Position. The incumbent serves in an at-will capacity and sits at the pleasure of the City Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS*

The City Clerk performs the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:

• Coordinates and prepares agenda for City Council and designated commission meetings.
• Reviews agenda items for compliance with legal requirements.
• Organizes completed staff reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Experience: 
Five (5) years of experience in performing high-level and complex administrative and analytical work, including two (2) years supervisory experience, preferable in a public agency.  Experience in a City Clerk's office is desirable.

Licenses and Certificates: 

Possession and maintenance of a valid California driver's license.  Must be able to obtain and maintain a Notary Commission within twelve (12) months of employment.  Ability to obtain certification as a Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) within three (3) years, if not already obtained.  Possession of Certified Municipal Clerk designation upon hire is highly desirable.

Bilingual: 
Knowledge of a second language is beneficial.

Associate Engineer is the journey level class of this series responsible for routine office or field projects. Employees are expected to be fully competent to independently perform a full range of duties requiring a high level of technical expertise, and some periodic supervisory responsibilities. Employees may also serve as a resident engineer on construction projects.

• Stormwater management and treatment practices, including green infrastructure and low impact development measures to reduce runoff and prevent stormwater pollution.

• Assist in drafting and preparing instructions for bidders, proposals, affidavits, bonds, specifications, change orders and other documents and reports involved in the construction of engineering projects. 
• Ensure County compliance with the Municipal Regional Stormwater Permit issued by the Regional Water Quality Control Board. 
• Update ordinances, regulations, and policy manuals as needed to comply with changing State, regional, and local requirements. 
• Inspect construction projects for conformance with specifications, safety standards and federal, state and local regulations. 
• Conduct economic cost and quantity estimates for assigned projects. 
• Supervise subordinate personnel in a variety of capacities. 
• Perform related duties as assigned.

We are seeking an innovative and proactive Building Official with a positive, forward-thinking perspective. The Building Official will manage all building division functions (building permit issuance, plan check, and building inspections). The position reports to the Community Development Director. The Building Official will assist in integrating the City’s vision, goals, and people strategy with the business strategy of the Community Development Department; managing, planning, and organizing Community Development services, programs, and operations; developing and implementing policy; crafting and accomplishing department and City objectives, goals, and performance metrics within guidelines established by the City Council and City Manager. The Building Official must exercise a high degree of judgment and discretion along with political acumen and an understanding of the needs of the community.

The City is experiencing a high volume of development applications, including residential, commercial, assisted living, and industrial projects. There is also significant interest in downtown revitalization. Some key initiatives on the horizon for the Building Official include:

• Implementation of the Thousand Oaks Boulevard Specific Plan, which is a top-priority downtown revitalization project that includes mixed-use development and focuses on an attractive, dynamic, and pedestrian-oriented environment

THE POSITION

The City is currently seeking General Maintenance Workers. This temporary position works with the City’s maintenance staff to perform: unskilled labor in the parks and landscape medians, street and sidewalk maintenance, street sign maintenance, and building maintenance. Duties include, but are not limited to: raking, emptying trash cans and litter removal, irrigation repair, weeding, edging, street sign maintenance and graffiti removal. Work is closely supervised; work methods are explained in specific terms and work is subject to frequent review. 

Incumbents must possess the physical and mental capacity to work under the conditions described in this document and to perform the duties required by their assigned position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in landscaping, street and sidewalk maintenance, and building maintenance, as well as safety practices and precautions to be used in work.
• Skill in operating hand and power tool equipment such as rakes, pick and shovel, etc.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather and to follow oral and written instructions. Intermittently, sit while studying or listening to training; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing maintenance, repair, or installation tasks; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; and lift or carry heavy weights up to 90 lbs.; work in conditions of various outdoor exposure.
• Capable of working independently.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Driving a city truck is required for the position and the applicant must have an acceptable driving record, subject to California DMV pull records.
• Ability to work Saturday and/or Sunday shifts.  Hours are 7AM-4:30PM and may fluctuate due to operational needs.
