Job Summary: This is a substitute position; (ON CALL, AS NEEDED BASIS)
Under the direction of an assigned certificated teacher, assist in caring for and reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of special education students in a classroom or other learning environment; assist students with performing daily living, special health care activities, and academics.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist in caring for and reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of special education students in a classroom or other learning environment; monitor/oversee student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects; confer with the teacher concerning lesson plans and materials, and provide input and suggestions to meet student needs
- Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom according to established policies and procedures; monitor students during outdoor, eating, field trip and various other activities as assigned; monitor and report progress regarding student performance and behavior
- Assist students with performing and developing independent living and self-help skills; assist students with personal hygiene including dressing, washing and grooming; assist students with eating and activities; toilet students and change diapers and soiled clothing as needed
- Escort students to and from buses, classes and other locations; push student wheelchairs; lift students in and out of wheelchairs and other equipment; load and unload students on and off of buses; accompany and assist students in mainstreamed classes and take notes as required
- Assist students with physical therapy, positioning, developing motor skills and related exercises as required; utilize adaptive equipment; assist students with developing independent walking and mobility skills; interact with and assist students during play, exercise and recreation
- Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) and related goals and objectives; assist students with meeting IEP goals and objectives; maintain various records and files related to students, IEP’s, attendance, health care activities, and assigned duties
- Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain classroom and other areas in a safe, orderly and clean manner; wipe down and disinfect classroom equipment
- Provide medical assistance and health care to special education students as assigned; administer first aid and CPR according to established procedures as needed; assist students with tube feeding, seizures and other health care activities; dispense medications according to prescribed instructions
- Read books to students and observe their reading abilities; assist students with letter and word pronunciation and recognition; assist students with spelling and writing exercises and assignments
- Provide classroom support to the teacher as required
Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience providing the job knowledge, skills, and ability for successful job performance will be considered for positions in this classification. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
EDUCATION: Equivalent to completion of 12th grade; additional training in education, special education, or a related field is desirable
EXPERIENCE: Minimum one (1) year of experience working in an organized educational setting; Experience working with special education students is strongly desired
Specialized Skills and Knowledge:
- Knowledge of methods, techniques, procedures, and practices utilized in the care of severely disabled children of all ages
- Knowledge of problems and concerns of students with special needs
- Knowledge of safe practices and procedures in classroom activities, and appropriate student conduct
- Knowledge of basic subjects taught in County Office schools including arithmetic, reading, writing, grammar and spelling
- Ability to assist children with developing and performing social, independent living, communicative, self-help and learning skills and activities
- Ability to provide medical assistance and health care to special education students as assigned
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding, and receptive attitude towards children with disabilities
- Ability to assist a certificated teacher in caring for and reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of special education students in a classroom or other learning environment
- Ability to monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress

- Lifting and carrying students; pushing children in wheelchairs as assigned by the position
- Mobility to chase and restrain students as necessary
- Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students
- Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities
- Hearing and speaking to monitor student activities and to exchange information
- Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
Examination Process: The examination process for this classification will consist of:
- A review of application materials, including supplemental questionnaire, education, training, experience, and accuracy and quality of application
- A Basic Skills Proficiency test covering student situations, reading, writing, and arithmetic
- A brief oral evaluation interview
