The City of Burlingame currently has one opening for an Intern to assist in the Public Works Department.  Duties will primarily consist of field data collection using a handheld device, as well as editing datasets and creating maps in an office environment using geographic information system (GIS) software.  This is a temporary position with a flexible schedule of approximately 20-30 hours per week.

The ideal candidate will have a professional demeanor, the ability to work effectively with a variety of people, and will have an energetic attitude and be self-motivated.  This is an excellent opportunity for students studying geographic information systems or a related field who have an interest in public works and local government.

Under general supervision, duties may include but are not limited to the following:

• Perform field data collection of public infrastructure assets throughout the City using a handheld device.
• Verify and revise geographic information system (GIS) datasets.
• Create maps or reports as needed to support Public Works projects and programs.
• Respond to information requests from the public and City staff via email and phone.
• General office support as assigned, such as scanning, filing, and data entry.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education and Experience:

Sufficient education and/or experience to perform job duties.  Academic status at an accredited college or university in a related field (e.g., Geography, Engineering, Urban Planning, etc.) is preferred; however, high-school-age students may be considered.  The ideal candidate will have GIS skills or sufficient computer skills to be trained in mapping software.  Knowledge of Microsoft Office; Microsoft Windows; information technology; ESRI ArcGIS; and/or a basic understanding of electronics is also ideal, though not required.  Current students are preferred, but recent graduates are welcome to apply.  Relevant experience may be substituted for education.

Ability to: Understand and carry out both oral and written instructions; work independently and as an effective team player; establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, colleagues, and members of the public; learn a variety of tasks quickly and in a high-paced, constantly-changing environment; physically capable of performing the essential job function; work outdoors in varied weather conditions and with exposure to potentially hazardous traffic conditions.

Must be 18 years or older and have a California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record. 

Due to the driving requirements of this position, a DMV Form H-6 will be required if the applicant moves forward in the process.  See the selection process section of this announcement for more information.

Selection Process:

Applications will be reviewed weekly and qualifying candidates will be contacted with specific information regarding a department interview.  Possession of minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview.  The final appointment will be made by the Senior Management Analyst.

Under the general supervision of a Public Works Streets Supervisor or Parks & Grounds Supervisor, and direction of a Maintenance II lead, incumbents in this classification assist with the cleanup and maintenance of City parks, streets, and satellite facilities including buildings, equipment, bus stops, parking lots, trails, flora and landscapes; and, perform related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Emptying garbage cans.
• Picking up litter and other illegal dumping.
• Raking and spreading material including, but not limited to, asphalt, mulch, gravel, and soil.
• Collecting shopping carts.
• Removing weeds by hand or using tools.
• Driving vehicles to and from jobsite.
• Digging soil, baserock, concrete grindings, or other loose material as assigned.
• Using hand tools to complete assigned tasks.
• May work in right-of-way near traffic.
• May work in parks, trails, or other landscape areas.
• May assist with homeless encampment cleanup.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

Under direct supervision, the Seasonal/Temporary Maintenance Worker is assigned to the Parks Maintenance and/or Streets Maintenance functions of the Public Works Department and assist in a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks.

In the Parks Division these include: trash collection, graffiti removal, weed removal, irrigation repairs, operating battery powered blowers, weed trimmers, hedge trimmers, mowers and other equipment and tasks as needed to maintain City parks, landscapes, vegetation, trees and additional tasks as needed.

In the Streets Division these include trash collection, graffiti removal, drainage facility clearing and repairs, street sign repairs and replacement, road and curb paint work, pothole repairs, asphalt repairs and additional tasks as needed.

The City of Brisbane will be sponsoring up to five summer internships this year.  Our internships are project-oriented and designed to give college students a good general overview of future employment opportunities and current issues in the Public Sector.  You will have the opportunity for exposure to various areas of City Administration during your internship and to network with fellow interns and participate in professional development activities in San Mateo County and/or Santa Clara County.

Projects for 2023 include:

• Communications – Assist with developing innovative and relevant content for posting on all City-administered social media sites, organize the digital media library, and research and recommend tools used in managing data and performance of social media posts and campaigns.

• IT – Have some familiarity with programs such as Windows, Active Directory, Office/Microsoft 365, and basic knowledge of physical network and computer components. Projects will consist of adding and editing AD and email accounts and sorting and organizing hardware components. Some daily tasks will include responding to help desk requests and making basic equipment repairs and replacements.

• Public Works (Sustainability) - Provide support to the City's Public Works Sustainability Division in managing environmental and climate programs. Assignments will focus on energy efficiency and electrification efforts in existing buildings. Primary responsibilities will include compliance review for the Brisbane Building Efficiency Program, including benchmarking, performance and auditing requirements, and presentation of public disclosure data. Other sustainability projects may be assigned as needed.

• Public Works (Utilities) – Provide support to the City's Public Works Department - Utilities Division in managing various engineering projects in drinking water distribution, water resources, sanitary sewer collection, and storm drainage.  Assignments will focus primarily on regulatory compliance, design and construction of capital utility projects, and various engineering reports and studies.

• Finance - Provide support in updating procedural documents, preparing accounting schedules for annual audits, performing contract reviews, maintaining records retention compliance, and completing other technical assignments in the City’s Finance Division.

Applicants must be college students currently enrolled in and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university in a related field (e.g. public administration, public policy, business, planning, library science, environmental studies, engineering, sustainability). Undergraduate candidates must have a minimum of 48 semester units or equivalent completed.  Applicants should also be self-motivated, have excellent interpersonal skills, able to use Microsoft Office software, demonstrate good research ability and have the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. 

SALARY AND HOURS: The salary range for Interns is $20.00 per hour, 15-18 hours per week over a 12-week period.  The start date is flexible depending on the student’s availability.

The City of San Rafael Public Works Department (DPW) is seeking an individual to join the team as part of the Honorary Dean Allison Internship program. This position will work part-time (up to 4 days/30 hours per week) with department staff on special projects and move forward the mission of San Rafael to support the community members we serve. 

The Honorary Dean Allison Internship was created to honor Dean Allison, the City’s Public Works Director from September 2015 to March 2016, before his untimely passing. In his brief time with the City, he embraced and embodied the ideals of public service and transparency. Dean focused on the needs of the public and worked effectively with individuals and groups throughout San Rafael to respond decisively to a broad spectrum of needs both large and small in a creative and community focused way. The namesake internship celebrates his life and his time serving the citizens of San Rafael.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Honorary Dean Allison Internship may include:

• Assisting staff to develop and implement the City’s sidewalk maintenance program.
• Drafting, iterating, and designing policy to introduce the City’s tree ordinance, urban forestry initiative, and the City’s public asset inventory project 
• Assisting with the permitting, sediment, reporting and regulatory compliance in support of the City’s Dredging project.
• Designing content and materials for public dissemination and outreach regarding City projects, maintenance activities, and public safety information.
• Preparing written reports on DPW program activities.
• Creating, updating and auditing project financial spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel.
• Conducting research and analysis of federal, state and local laws related to DPW engineering projects.
• Compiling information, preparing documents and public education materials for community members and stakeholders on DPW projects.
• Participating in citywide projects in which DPW public works programs and activities.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Graduated or currently enrolled in the 3rd year of a Bachelor’s degree program or higher in an Engineering, Business, Public Administration, Environmental Science, or related program.
• Ability to multitask and stay organized.
• Proficient computer efficiency, including familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Ability to demonstrate characteristics of listening, flexibility, follow-through, problem solving, community-orientation, and identifying “win-win” solutions.
