THE POSITION: 
This position performs professional planning duties related to current and/or long-range planning, including neighborhood planning, demographic or housing analysis, code amendments and land use studies; reviews plans and explains policies and regulations to the public; and provides technical support to management staff.

To perform professional planning duties related to current and/or long-range planning, including neighborhood planning, demographic or housing analysis, code amendments and land use studies; to review plans and explain policies and regulations to the public; and to provide technical support to management staff.

Assistant Planner - This is the entry-level class within the professional Planner series. This class is distinguished from the journey level by the performance of more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters allocated to the journey level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees have only limited or no directly related professional planning work experience. Employees work under general supervision while learning job tasks.


Incumbents may advance from the Assistant Planner to the Associate Planner level based on a recommendation by their supervisor and approval from the Director of Development Services or designee. Advancement may result after the incumbent gains sufficient knowledge and experience in professional Planning work, as well as City and departmental practices and procedures, to be able to consistently perform the work of the higher classification.

This class is distinguished from that of the Senior Planner, which is an advanced journey level class responsible for more complex and difficult planning projects and programs and exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.

 

 

Essential Duties

What you will do:  
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Research, analyze and interpret social, economic, population and land use data, trends and reports.

Prepare and present written reports on various planning matters such as elements of the general plan, neighborhood plans, demographic or housing analysis, code amendments, and miscellaneous land use studies.

Prepare and/or monitor preparation of environmental documents including environmental analyses of development impacts and related preparation of negative declarations and/or environmental impact reports; work with consultants in facilitating preparation of environmental impact reports and related findings and documentation.

Review building, site and architectural plans, use permits, zone changes, variances, development proposals, applications and other related documents for conformance to City standards and other applicable state and federal rules and regulations; serve as primary point of contact to developers and property owners in meeting these standards.

Prepare and update maps, graphs and other graphics for use in reports and public presentations.

Review and analyze development proposals and work with developers, the public and other agencies regarding various land use permits, general plan amendments, and zone changes.

Provide information to the public, developers, public officials and staff members about land use matters to clarify and assure conformance to city and state policies and regulations regarding zoning and other development controls, acceptable development proposals, compatibility with adopted plans and environmental impacts.

Make presentations to the Planning Commission, City Council, and other interested parties regarding land use applications, general plan amendments, zoning changes, code amendments, and special studies.

Analyze, interpret and apply regional, state, and federal regulations.

Coordinate ongoing planning related programs or projects involving multi-department and multi-jurisdictional cooperation; provide professional planning guidance in responding to questions or inquiries.

Attend and serve on intra-departmental and inter-agency planning committees.

Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

Experience: No professional experience is required; one (1) year of technical planning experience is desired.

Education:   Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, environmental studies, architecture, or a related field.
 
License:    Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver's License. Membership in the American Planning Association (APA) is desirable.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The Gilroy Police Department is actively seeking an undergraduate-level or graduate- level Police Administration College Intern to assist police officers and other professional staff in various divisions. The intern will perform general clerical duties related to crime analysis, youth task form and gang prevention, public safety communication, community outreach, handle confidential information, and assist with other police related projects and assignments. The Police Administration Intern will also engage and interact with the community at various local community events.

The Police Intern will work under the direction of a Police Sergeant and/or Police Captain to help streamline the needs of the multiple units in the Police Department.

VOLUNTEER WORK SCHEDULE

About the Position: The Planning Department is seeking two interns who are interested in learning about open space conservation and planning for ecologically sensitive recreation. Their responsibilities may include researching and compiling project information, supporting with community and stakeholder engagement, assisting with environmental review and documentation, researching new programs and initiatives, conducting field surveys and data collection, and using computer-based systems such as GIS, Microsoft Excel and Adobe Illustrator for analysis of data and preparation of documents regarding Midpen lands and facilities. The interns will work as a team and individually on assignments, including opportunities for field work to gain experience in data collection techniques and tools and on-the-job training in planning research, analysis, and written communication.  The expected start date for the interns is on or after July 8, 2024. We have limited flexibility to change the start date.

Basic Requirements: Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months). Successful candidates will have a background in the natural sciences, park/open space management, land use/environmental planning, GIS/geography, biology, ecology, or another related field; and experience with field data collection techniques. This internship requires strong organizational and analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and with a team. Experience with MS Outlook, MS Word and Excel, ArcGIS software, GPS equipment, Microsoft Excel, and Apple iPads is desired, and familiarity with Midpen preserves/trails as well as local flora, fauna, and natural history are a plus.   Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California driver’s license is required. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

 

Working Conditions: This position will report to the Planning Department at the Administrative Office in Los Altos, California.  Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work environment for this position, which will be divided between onsite work, field visits, and limited home office work.  Fieldwork is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone or with another intern in wildland areas, traversing rough difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak and dense vegetation, and carrying equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week, which will extend up to a total of 950 hours over a 6-9 month period. This is a non-benefited position.

A Dispatcher II is a civilian employee of the Police Department who performs a variety of tasks in the Department’s Support Services Division. The Dispatcher II acts as the Department’s primary dispatcher, receiving and relaying incoming calls for emergency and non-emergency assistance; dispatching police units; operating a variety of telecommunications equipment including radio, telephone, and computer-aided dispatch systems; status monitoring, records and file maintenance in a computer-aided environment; and entry level dispatch training. A Dispatcher II may be assigned to work various hours, shifts, holidays, weekends and overtime.

Additional duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: prioritize requests for service based upon available resources, receive radio requests and handle accordingly, type, process and file a wide variety of reports and materials including memos, letters, complaints, declarations, warrants, citations, crime and traffic reports.  Assists Department personnel and the public in person and by phone performing record checks, collecting fees and mailing requested reports to outside agencies in accordance with established regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Have a combination of education and work experience, including a minimum of 1 year of dispatch work; general office work involving typing of varied materials, public contact, general filing and basic record keeping; type at least 40 wpm (net).  Have knowledge of business English, spelling; modern office practices and procedures; record keeping. Ability to dispatch police units quickly and effectively; work under pressure; exercise independent judgment; work with minimal supervision; make sound decisions in emergency situations; learn assigned clerical tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed routine; write English legibly; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; operate computer-aided dispatch system, 911 emergency telephone, and other multi-line telephone systems, various law enforcement telecommunications systems, radio console with headsets and handsets, computer keyboards, cameras, intercoms, security. COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The City of Pleasant Hill offers a competitive compensation and benefits program.

• Salary:  $6,538 to $8,468 per month. Placement within the range depends on experience and qualifications.

SELECTION PROCESS

About the Position:  Midpen's Board approved the addition of two new Planner III positions to the Planning Department. The Planner III focuses on a wide variety of planning and capital improvement projects that include long-range planning; land use planning; and conceptual site design to increase public access, outdoor recreation, and enjoyment of Midpen’s lands. The Planner III is tasked with performing complex professional level planning, analysis, and design; developing and administering project scopes, schedules and budgets; directing the feasibility and conceptual design phase of capital improvement projects such as trails, staging areas and staff facilities; developing recommendations for land use policies; preparing long-range master plans to guide the use and management of Midpen lands; conducting or overseeing studies to identify and evaluate environmental issues related to public access and natural and cultural resources; conducting public outreach and engagement; preparing requests for proposals; assisting in development of grant applications; preparing and/or assisting in the preparation of environmental review documents; and obtaining planning permits and initial approvals for projects. The Planner III also provides project presentations to senior management, the Board of Directors, and Committees, and at public meetings, that may be held in the evenings and weekends.

Work Environment:  This position is part of the Planning Department at the District’s offices in Los Altos, California.  Planner III project presentations may be held in the evenings and weekends. Education and Experience:  Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:  Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in urban or regional planning, environmental planning or design, environmental sciences, landscape architecture or a related field, and at least three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience with five (5) years desired in project management (design, planning or environmental review projects), preferably in parks, open space or related field, including at least one (1) year of direct supervisory and administrative responsibility (which can include management of consultant team). 

Licenses & Certifications Required:   Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
