This is the entry journey level classification in the City's sworn police officer series. Incumbents may enter the class either as a recruit, academy graduate or lateral status. Police recruits are entry-level positions with little or no related training or experience required. Recruits must complete a State certified Police Academy prior to appointment to probationary status as a police officer. NOTE: This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for current and future vacancies. Successful candidates must be willing to work a shift schedule, which includes days, nights, weekends and holidays. Shift assignments are determined by seniority. Any prospective candidate will need to pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination before being hired by the Salinas Police Department.
Under general supervision, a Police Officer is responsible for the performance of law enforcement duties to protect life and property in accordance with applicable laws, to carry out special assignments as necessary, and other related duties as assigned.
A wide variety of assignments are available which include Patrol, Traffic, Narcotics, Detectives, Off-Road and Surface Street Motorcycle Patrol, Bike Patrol, Special Weapons Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, DARE, Canine, Background Investigations, School Liaison, Gang Suppression, Special Enforcement Section and Intelligence.
