The primary goal of the internship program is to provide a college student or recent graduate an opportunity to apply their academic training in a municipal government setting. Job Description:

The Town of Los Altos Hills is recruiting a college intern to work in the Community Development Department. The intern will split time between the planning and building divisions of CDD. The role for planning will include support of both short range and long range planning.  Interns working on long range planning will work primarily as a research aide for the Town’s 2023-2031 certified Housing Element implementation.  For short range planning and the building division support interns will be focused on day to day permit activities, but may also work on other more general department duties as needed.

Examples of Duties:

• Conduct research and analysis of State Law and Fair Housing requirements for the Town’s 2023-2031 certified Housing Element implementation
• Conduct field investigations as necessary
• Prepare and conduct surveys in association with the Housing Element implementation progress and reporting
• Creating illustrative graphics, flyers and informational handouts
• Providing planning customer support at the public counter/virtual counter
• Other general Department tasks to include but not limited to: research, response to inquiries, assisting staff, filing, data entry, and record keeping

Qualifications:

• Completion of at least two (2) years and current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree or Graduate degree program with major course work in urban planning, geography, architecture, environmental studies and/or related field.

Job Description:  

The intern will work in the Public Works/Engineering Department and will be assisting engineering project managers with general clerical, administrative, field work, and technical tasks for public works projects.  Tasks may include electronic document filing, checking mathematical calculations, creating spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel, preparing presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint, entering data and creating reports in various software applications, performing field data collection or investigation, construction management, internet research, creating map displays using Auto CAD, Google Maps/Earth, compiling and organizing data or documents.  The intern may also assist in other areas such as internal and external Department communication and public outreach.

Qualifications:

• Ability to learn new information quickly

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and web-based resources

The City of Foster City has an opening for a Engineering Intern in the Public Works Department. The position is part-time with flexible scheduling, up to 980 hours per fiscal year, and no benefits provided. The department is interested in candidates for the summer or candidates who can start as soon as possible.  

Important and Essential Responsibilities: 
Daily responsibilities will include works directly with the Public Works staff, populating the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database, and performing indexing and data entry. Other duties may include providing project assistance to technical and engineering staff related to capital improvement projects, researching, CAD drafting, plan review, data collection and analysis, permit issuance, and compiling information from various sources, and providing administrative or other support in the Public Works Department. 

Education and Training Guidelines: 
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be:

• Education: Graduation from high school. A degree or degree in progress in Engineering program in a school or university is required.
• Experience:  No experience is necessary; 6 months of paid or documented volunteer experience in a municipal agency is desirable.

The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is seeking seasonal Election Vote Center Representatives (Office Assistant I) to assist in the upcoming March 5, 2024 Presidential Primary Election. Vote Centers offer in-person voting, voter registration, and additional services to the public up to a month before the election.
 
We are currently seeking dedicated and hard-working individuals for the temporary, full-time positions of Vote Center Representatives to be hired for the following duties:

• Use an iPad tablet to verify voter eligibility.
• Provide information about the current election.
• Guide voters on use of electronic ballot marking devices.
• Operate office equipment including Windows Laptops, printers, and iPad tablets.
• Provide in-person voter assistance to register to vote and cast a ballot.
• Issue ballots using Windows laptops.
• Maintain accurate files and records.
• Secure Election materials and supplies to maintain the integrity of the election.

The Elections Division is an exciting, fast-paced environment, especially as elections approach. Vote Centers will be open for two, four, eleven, and thirty days. Those hired can expect to work approximately 7 – 35 days including training and onboarding. The last anticipated day of employment will be March 7, 2024.
 
Vote Center Representatives will work eight (8) hours per day in-person once the site opens. Typical hours are 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with the addition of at least one weekend (March 2-3, 2024). This assignment will include one setup day of at least four hours before opening the location. On Election Day, Vote Center Representatives will work from 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. or later.  
 
The hourly wage for this position starts at: $22.97. These positions will require working overtime, including long hours, weekends, evenings, and holidays.  

• Authorized time worked more than 40 hours in the workweek: compensated at the rate of one and one-half (1-1/2) times the straight-time rate.
• Hours worked on a holiday: compensated at the rate of one and one-half (1-1/2) times the straight-time rate as provided in the Overtime Section of this MOU for their work group.

 
NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week. Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act.  Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

 

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have a minimum of one year of general clerical, office assistant, phone services or computer experience, experience with customer service, and a close attention to detail.
 
Critical skills for all Vote Center positions include the ability to prioritize work, coordinate several activities, organize and maintain accurate files and records, and understand and carry out oral and written directions. Several positions require fluency in Burmese, Cantonese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish and/or Tagalog/Filipino.
 
The position requires basic addition and subtraction. Vote Center Representatives must be proficient in the operation of a Windows computer, computer software, and applications. This position also requires the ability to operate standard office equipment, learn computer applications/software quickly and accurately, and serve members of the public.

Clerical Support/Vote by Mail

• Data entry
• Processing Vote by Mail ballots

Outreach Services

• Presenting information about the upcoming election

Vote Center Help & Support

• Answer and route calls from Vote Center Representatives, Field Techs and Ballot Retrieval Operations
• Assist Vote Center Representatives in resolving procedural, equipment and/or supplies issues at the Vote Centers 
• Create, assign and/or resolve incident tickets
• Call center experience preferred, but not required 

 
Voting Equipment

• Function-testing voting equipment
