Examples of Duties

Employees in this classification are trained in, and perform the following duties:

• Receive business or emergency calls for law enforcement, fire, medical, and other public service agencies.
• Screen information to determine nature of call, perform call classification, determine priority and jurisdiction, and document activity.
• Screen and prioritize telephone workload. 
• Remain cognizant of workloads and specific systems status.
• Provide support and assistance in a team concept during day-to-day operations, and critical or large-scale incidents.
• Assist in the coordination of mutual aid incidents.
• Develop and foster a positive working rapport with direct and in-direct customers, the public, and co-workers.
• Testify in court regarding legal proceeding related to dispatch call(s) received.
• Prepare and submit various reports such as incident reports.
• Develop and maintain working knowledge of highways, streets, buildings, and major points of interest in the County and adjacent areas.
• Remain current on procedures for manual dispatch operations and Communications Center evacuation.
• Provide off hours services as required.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. 

• A typical way to qualify is a minimum of one year of experience receiving and processing calls while performing multiple tasks simultaneously.

Knowledge of:

• English language, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
• Customer service and interpersonal communications principles.
• Computer operation and use in office and Communications Center environments.
• Basic principles in communicating by means of face-to-face contact, telephone, and/or data terminals.
• Various resources within the County to provide referrals to the public and public safety agencies.

Other requirements of the position:

• Successfully complete a pre-employment medical examination and be subject to polygraph testing.
• Follow strict drug use standards and guidelines.
• Possess good moral character and psychological suitability as determined by a thorough background investigation, including fingerprinting and psychological evaluation.
• Be willing to work the day, swing, graveyard, rotating, holiday, and weekend shifts.
• Be willing to work 12 to 16 hours per day.
• Be willing to accept overtime assignments, including last minute spontaneous mandatory assignments.

This is an Open and Promotional recruitment.  Anyone may apply.  Current County of San Mateo employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in classified regular, probationary, Confidential or Management extra-help/limited term, or SEIU or AFSCME represented extra help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.

The examination process will consist of an application review and the administration of the computer based CritiCall Examination (weight: 100%).  Applicants whose application passes the application review will be invited to take the CritiCall exam. Candidates who achieve a passing on the CritiCall exam will be placed on the Eligible, or Hiring List based on the order of their score on the exam.  The top seven candidates on the Eligible List will be considered to fill one vacancy.  For each additional vacancy, one additional candidate will be added to those who can be considered for the positions.  

Once the recruitment closes and the applications have been reviewed, applicants will be sent a link to the CritiCall exam.  Applicants will have a 14-day window in which to complete the examination.  Because the exam is computer based, applicants can take the exam at their convenience during the ten-day time frame.

The CritiCall exam is a computer based Public Safety Dispatcher Pre-Employment Skills test. The wide array of tests within the CritiCall exam provides a comprehensive inventory of a candidate's skills and abilities.  Achieving a passing score on the exam is a requirement for employment.  

The examination simulates some of the duties and situations a 911 Communications Dispatcher might encounter on the job.  No specialized knowledge or skills are required to take the exam. 

The CritiCall exam tests for skills and abilities in areas such as decision-making, data entry, call summarization, multi-tasking, cross-referencing, vocalization, character comparison, memory recall, prioritization, mathematics, probability, map reading, reading comprehension, spelling, and sentence clarity.
 
Once the recruitment closes and all applications have been screened, applicants whose applications pass the screening will be sent a link to take the CritiCall exam.  Applicants will have up to ten days to complete the exam.  Complete instructions will be sent in the correspondence regarding registering for and taking the exam.  The exam can be taken at the convenience of the test taker, during the ten specified days.  

Candidates who receive a passing score on the CritiCall exam will be placed on the Hiring List (Eligible List) in the order of the scores from the exam.  The top seven candidates from the Hiring List will be considered for one vacancy.  One additional candidate will be included for each additional vacancy.  

Candidates who successfully pass the CritiCall examination and the panel interview and are being offered a position will be required to complete a pre-employment, POST mandated, background investigation that includes a medical examination and polygraph testing.

The City of San José is recruiting for a Finance Applications Associate IT Manager (Enterprise Principal Technology Analyst) in the Information Technology Department. This position is responsible for the management and support of the City's enterprise Finance Management System, Revenue Management/Collection System, and Finance Reporting System. ABOUT THE POSITION
The Gilroy Police Department is actively seeking an undergraduate-level or graduate- level Police Administration College Intern to assist police officers and other professional staff in various divisions. The intern will perform general clerical duties related to crime analysis, youth task form and gang prevention, public safety communication, community outreach, handle confidential information, and assist with other police related projects and assignments. JOB SUMMARY: The San Mateo County Transit District is seeking a highly technical IT Operations Supervisor to join our team. Under the supervision of the IT Operations Manager, the Supervisor will coordinate the efficient and effective operations of the Help Desk team for the District, including work direction and supervision of Help Desk staff and coordination with other District information technology staff. This position is responsible for planning, assigning, and directing work; documenting and gaining approval for all help desk support procedures and system documentation; and assisting team members in answering calls, addressing service or escalation issues, and applying independent decision making to resolve problems or escalate problems to management. The IT Operations Supervisor develops regular reports on help desk contacts, ensures that service levels are met, identifies trends and makes recommendations for service improvements, and provides budgetary recommendations to management for service growth and/or improvement.

IT Operations Supervisor will work closely with various users in San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans), the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain), and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority (TA) and other departments and is responsible for managing all procedures related to the identification, prioritization, and resolution of end user help requests, including the monitoring, tracking, and coordination of Help Desk functions. The role will also contribute to problem resolution by giving in-person, hands-on support to end users at the desktop level.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Supervise help desk support staff’s daily activities ensuring timely and professional delivery of technical support for calls on computers, core software products, and related hardware peripherals.
• Plan, organize, and direct the work of help desk support staff, including Help Desk Specialists; schedule shift coverage; evaluate and document performance and recommend disciplinary action when necessary; and review staff work for accuracy and timely completion of assigned duties.

Under close supervision, Police Data Specialists learn to perform specialized technical work utilizing automated law enforcement information systems that lend support to sworn personnel and other department members. Duties include complex data input and retrieval processes requiring extreme accuracy; providing services to the community; and performing related work as required. O.S.S.D. operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

The Police Department provides a six-month training program. During a one-year probationary period, incumbents complete the training program and a subsequent six months of on-the-job training. This includes but is not limited to a demonstrated proficiency of all aspects of Operations Support Services Division's responsibilities. While on probation, candidate performance is rated on a daily basis by experienced Police Data Specialists, Senior Police Data Specialists and/or other supervisors. Those who pass probation receive a pass/fail proficiency examination. Upon passing the examination, incumbents will be promoted to the position of Police Data Specialist II.

The workweek may consist of four workdays of 10.5 hours followed by 3 consecutive days off or five workdays of 8.5 hours followed by 2 consecutive days off. Each workday includes two paid 15 minute breaks and a 1/2 hour unpaid meal breaks. OSSD employees wear uniforms. This position is eligible for a uniform allowance which will not exceed $500.00 annually. Payments shall be made during the first two (2) pay periods of each month, in the amount of $20.83 per biweekly pay period. Trainees are expected to purchase and begin wearing their uniforms by the start of the 16th week of training.

Trainees are rotated through different units of OSSD and will be assigned to various shifts (Day, Swing and Midnight) and days off. New PDS's should expect to work night shifts, weekends and holidays. A shift differential of $2.25 per hour for Swing Shift and $2.50 per hour for Midnight shift is added to the base salary and compensatory time or pay will be granted for holiday work in accordance with the memorandum of agreement between the City of San Jose and the Municipal Employees Federation.

After training, PDS's bid for assignments, shifts (day, swing or midnight) and days off every six months in order of seniority as a Police Data Specialist. Senior employees typically select preferred shifts and days off and may have the option of a five day work week and/or alternate start times available to them. New employees may work nights, weekends and holidays for several years before they attain the seniority required to bid for more desirable assignments, shifts, days off and/or start times.

The Enterprise GIS team operates out of the Department of Public Works but works across the City to coordinate GIS efforts, lead multi-departmental GIS projects, geospatially-enable City business systems, and administer Enterprise GIS infrastructure for citywide use. The City has standardized on a modern technology stack consisting of Windows Server, Esri ArcGIS platform, VertiGIS Studio, Safe Software FME, and SQL Server enterprise geodatabases. The City has an enterprise license agreement with Esri, and the Enterprise GIS team maintains a large Enterprise GIS server environment with public and internal-facing ArcGIS Server instances, complementary ArcGIS Portal and ArcGIS Online organizations, an SDE environment featuring a data catalog with over 1000 feature classes, and integrations with dozens of business systems. This GIS ISA position will function as a Geocortex/ VertiGIS developer and will be primarily responsible for managing the VertiGIS environment and developing mapping applications and workflows within VertiGIS Studio .

The ISA is a professional-level position in the IT professional management series and responsible for GIS system administration, database design, business system integration, application development, and implementation of large-scale enterprise projects. The position requires strong technical experience as well as the ability to take initiative and direct others. The ideal candidate must be a strong individual contributor that is able to take full ownership of projects, designing solutions in alignment with City Enterprise GIS standards and industry best practices and working at a hands-on level to build, implement, and support such solutions. The position demands proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues with limited resources. Advanced knowledge of the ArcGIS platform and Geocortex Essentials/ VertiGIS Studio is required .

The GIS ISA reports to the Enterprise GIS Manager. This position is responsible for programming that supports the development and maintenance of major applications used citywide. Key responsibilities and duties may include but are not limited to the following:

• Administer and manage the VertiGIS Studio environment, including planning for and conducting system upgrades; applying and confirming patches; capacity planning and load testing; troubleshooting and resolving system issues; managing security policies, user accounts, roles, and permissions; and maintaining system documentation.
• Configure new mapping applications using VertiGIS Studio Web 5.x, including web map authoring, site configuration, and development of print templates, reports, and workflows.
• Develop customizations to VertiGIS Studio applications as needed to extend out-of-the-box functionality. Customizations may include JavaScript components within the application or custom workflow activities.
• Upgrade/rebuild existing Geocortex Essentials 4.x sites/viewers, workflows, reports, and print templates or ArcGIS Web Application Builder (WAB) applications on the VertiGIS Studio 5.x platform.

• Meet with business owners and end users to gather and document requirements and prepare and present solution design. Design, build, and deploy mapping applications and/or enhancements. Provide documentation, training, and support to end users.
• Establish and document best practices and standards for VertiGIS Studio applications and components and provide training/support to other City GIS staff looking to leverage VertiGIS Studio.
• Assist with administration of the City's ArcGIS Enterprise (ArcGIS Server and Portal) environments and enterprise geodatabases, and support other Enterprise GIS projects and initiatives as needed.

In addition, this position is part of a team responsible for providing GIS support in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) when activated .

LARPD is seeking a summer intern to support the Summer Youth Volunteer Program.  Applicants should have the equivalent of one year of college credits completed toward a degree.  Candidates interested in learning about recreation, volunteer management, and community services will be given preference.  Interested candidates should complete an application online. Community Outreach: Summer Youth Volunteers Project Plan 

The Community Outreach team is seeking a summer intern for a 10–12-week assignment.  The goal of the internship is to gain valuable experience managing high school aged volunteers that will support a variety of summer camps and programs throughout the district.  

Key duties 

• Be primary point of contact for Summer Youth Volunteers. 

• Assist with volunteer orientation and ongoing training sessions throughout the summer. 

• Oversee volunteer schedule. 

• Track volunteer hours logging. 

• Create program completion documents. 

• Assist with planning end of summer recognition event. 

Key deliverables will be: 

• Maintain volunteer hour tracking and create end of summer recap report. 

• Complete summer training and check-in reports. 

• Create and distribute volunteer completion certification with hours totals for all summer volunteers. 

• Report any concerns from staff and volunteers or development opportunities for volunteers through regular check-ins. 

What learning will occur for the intern? 

• Experience managing volunteers. 

• Learn how summer programs work/run in a special district.  

• Gain familiarity with volunteer management software. 

• Graphic design creating infographics and end-of-summer reports.

Timing 

June-August 9th.  Interns may start and end later but need to be present for the core Sessions slated for the entire month of June, July and through August 9th.  

Work hours will be Monday – Friday, 25-30 hours per week during the 12 weeks of employment.  The pay rate will be $20 per hour.  All interns will be required to successfully complete a Department of Justice fingerprint clearance and undergo a TB test as a condition of employment.

The Department: The Suisun City Police Department is a progressive and proactive law enforcement agency. As a result of its proximity to neighboring jurisdictions, the employees of the Suisun City Police Department remain extremely busy as they address the needs of the community. The Position: Under supervision (Public Safety Dispatcher I) or general supervision (Public Safety Dispatcher II)  the incumbent performs a variety of duties involved in receiving, evaluating, prioritizing, and relaying calls for emergency and non-emergency public safety assistance; dispatches appropriate units and coordinates response of emergency personnel; maintains, processes, and distributes police records; operates a variety of telecommunications equipment, including radio, telephone, and CAD systems; and performs a wide variety of specialized clerical duties involved in the preparation, maintenance, and release of materials related to law enforcement activities.

A Dispatcher II is a civilian employee of the Police Department who performs a variety of tasks in the Department’s Support Services Division. The Dispatcher II acts as the Department’s primary dispatcher, receiving and relaying incoming calls for emergency and non-emergency assistance; dispatching police units; operating a variety of telecommunications equipment including radio, telephone, and computer-aided dispatch systems; status monitoring, records and file maintenance in a computer-aided environment; and entry level dispatch training. A Dispatcher II may be assigned to work various hours, shifts, holidays, weekends and overtime.

Additional duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: prioritize requests for service based upon available resources, receive radio requests and handle accordingly, type, process and file a wide variety of reports and materials including memos, letters, complaints, declarations, warrants, citations, crime and traffic reports.  Assists Department personnel and the public in person and by phone performing record checks, collecting fees and mailing requested reports to outside agencies in accordance with established regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Have a combination of education and work experience, including a minimum of 1 year of dispatch work; general office work involving typing of varied materials, public contact, general filing and basic record keeping; type at least 40 wpm (net).  Have knowledge of business English, spelling; modern office practices and procedures; record keeping. Ability to dispatch police units quickly and effectively; work under pressure; exercise independent judgment; work with minimal supervision; make sound decisions in emergency situations; learn assigned clerical tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed routine; write English legibly; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; operate computer-aided dispatch system, 911 emergency telephone, and other multi-line telephone systems, various law enforcement telecommunications systems, radio console with headsets and handsets, computer keyboards, cameras, intercoms, security. Willingness to work varying shifts and radio dispatching skills.

• Salary:  $6,538 to $8,468 per month. Placement within the range depends on experience and qualifications.
