THE POSITION
To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water lines, sewers, storm drains, and pump stations. The purpose of this recruitment is to fill current temporary / part time vacancies in the Sanitary Sewer/Storm Drainage Systems Division. Candidates selected for hire will be placed in either the UMW Intern or UMW I position based on previous training, certifications, years of experience and ability to meet the minimum qualifications.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operate a variety of light and moderately heavy construction and maintenance equipment including such pieces as a loader, dump truck, water truck, steel rollers, High Velocity Vacuum Cleaner, mole trencher, and rubber-tired tractor with all attachments in order to perform a variety of routine construction and maintenance operations. Operate fork lift as assigned and trained. Perform general maintenance and repair on storm and wastewater collection facilities including installation, testing, and backfill of service laterals. Within the sewer and stormwater collections division, employees will be expected to use the Closed Circuit Television Truck, sewer cable machine, flush sewer laterals and mains, assist in sewer tap installations, clean storm drain lines and catch basins. All Utilities Maintenance Worker I/II will operate equipment and vehicles with possession of all necessary licenses and certificates, utilize proper safety precautions related to all performed work and comply with the policies and procedures in the department Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP). Regular, predictable, consistent and timely attendance is an essential function of the position, in that employee must be present to work on facilities and equipment impacting the public’s health and safety.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Respond to inquires from the general public. Prepare as built sketches, when required to convey information to engineering for graphic documentation. Check water meters for proper operation; troubleshoot registers and repair. Initiate and discontinue water service to customer accounts as directed. Operate telemetering and flow monitoring equipment. Work cooperatively with others. Perform related duties as assigned. Both Assignments will require employees to be “On Call” as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Utilities Maintenance Worker I:
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Courses in, or graduation from, the American Public Works Association’s Public Works Institute is desirable
Experience: One (1) year of experience in construction or related field.
License and Certificate: Requires possession of a valid California Driver's License. A Pipeline Assessment and Certification Program certificate issued by the National Association of Sewer System Companies (NASSCO) is desirable.

Current Salary:
Utilities Maintenance Worker Intern: $11.00 - $15.00 per hour
Utilities Maintenance Worker I: $18.77 - $23.96 per hour
Salary as of January 1, 2019:
Utilities Maintenance Worker Intern: $13.00 - $15.00 per hour
Utilities Maintenance Worker I: $18.95 - $24.19 per hour
The pay cycle is monthly. Payday is the last working day of the month. With the exception of Workers’ Compensation coverage, no other benefits are provided. Employees must contribute 1.45% of salary to Medicare and 7.5% to a retirement plan in accordance with Federal Law.
All positions are temporary/part-time, usually offering approximately 27 hours per week. All temporary/part-time employees may work no more than 130 hours per month and 960 hours per Fiscal Year.
