THE POSITION

Under supervision, a Building Inspector I performs detailed inspection of structures for conformance to codes, ordinances, approved plans, calculations, and specification; and other duties as assigned.

Field Inspection Functions

Performs building, fire, electrical, plumbing and mechanical inspections of all structures during construction to ensure conformance to City/State codes, ordinances, approved plans, calculations, and specifications, using appropriate safety precautions; checks for setbacks and conformance to zoning regulations; checks signs and fences; investigates complaints; interprets codes, reports violations and hazardous conditions and orders corrections; notifies builders of required changes and makes re- inspections; performs fire prevention inspections and investigations of new and existing structures; and advises the public regarding construction practices and principles.

Administrative Functions

Reviews plans and specifications for the purpose of conducting building inspection work; prepares records, reports and correspondence; utilizes personal computers to perform data entry functions; and may be assigned to assist in the Permit Center, as needed.

THE POSITION: 
This position inspects plans or buildings and construction for compliance with structural building codes, laws and ordinances and provides training and working lead assistance to other inspectors on structural matters as required.

You are: 
The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of the California Building Codes, CalGreen Code and related codes and regulations, including the methods, materials, techniques and practices employed in building inspection industry. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have working knowledge of the principles and practices of organization, administration, the ability to manage complex projects through inspection skills; and organization and functions of the various trades, agencies and organizations involved in the construction process, in addition to being an outstanding person, who aspires to excellence in customer service and is a committed team player.

You have: 
 Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:  
Four (4) years of experience dealing with code compliance considerations related to the structural elements of buildings.
OR
Two (2) years structural inspection experience involving major commercial or industrial installations.  

Education: 
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.                          
 
License:  
Possession of a Class C California Drivers License.

ICBO (International Conference of Building Officials) Certification as a structural and/or combination inspector is highly desirable, but not required.

DEFINITION:

TRANSIT PLANNER ASSISTANT

Under close supervision, the Assistant Transit Planner is responsible for providing entry level support to assist in the development, administration and analysis of the City’s public transit programs.

Under general supervision, the Associate Transit Planner is responsible for performing paraprofessional work to assist in the development, administration and analysis of the City’s public transit programs.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

TRANSIT PLANNER ASSISTANT

This is the entry-level class in the Transit Planner series and will receive direction and guidance from the Transit Manager. Work given to an incumbent in this class involves assisting in analysis and development of transit programs and services, research of new trends in public transit and comparing how Union City provides service delivery, and participation in coordination events or meetings on behalf of Union City. The Transit Planner Assistant has basic knowledge of the operating procedures and policies of transit and/or transportation planning. An incumbent may advance to the higher levels after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher-level class.

TRANSIT PLANNER ASSOCIATE

This is an experienced-level class within the Transit Planner series and will receive general direction from the Transit Manager. Work given to an incumbent in this class involves general analysis and development of transit programs and services, research of new trends in public transit and comparing how Union City provides service delivery, and participation in coordination events or meetings on behalf of Union City resulting in recommendations based on the incumbent’s work. The Transit Planner Associate has general knowledge of the operating procedures and policies of transit and/or transportation planning.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only) for the Transit Planner Assistant/Associate:

• Assist in/Evaluates* the planning, operations and activities of the City’s public transit programs (fixed route, paratransit, and microtransit).
• Assist in/Coordinates* a variety of studies for the preparation, analysis, or evaluation of reports and grant requests.
• Assist in/Prepares* the development of regularly occurring required plans or programs such as the Short Range Transit Plan (SRTP), Title VI and Language Assistance Plan (LAP), Transit Asset Management (TAM) Plan, and Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP).
• Assist in/Coordinates* the preparation of the scope of work (RFP’s, IFB’s, etc.) and other contract management related tasks such as monitoring and closeout of service and maintenance contracts, professional services, vehicle procurements, etc.

*DUTIES EXPECTED TO BE PERFORMED BY THE TRANSIT PLANNER ASSOCIATE

A Responsible individual is needed to maintain and enforce proper city procedures and policies in our parks, parking lots and ball fields.   Park monitors will perform park inspections and enforce park policies, supervise patrons, renters and daily facility management. Park monitors and parking lot attendants must stand firm on policies, control diverse situations and always possess a friendly disposition and professional demeanor.  Park monitors and parking lot attendants must also have the ability to communicate and respond to customer service concerns, handle all weather conditions and be reliable with a strong work ethic and personal integrity. Park monitors and parking lot attendants will be required to wear a city uniform while on duty.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Associate Transportation Engineer in the Transportation Division of the Public Works Department! 

When assigned to development review, you will have the opportunity to review residential, commercial, industrial and public works project plans, traffic impact reports, and other development and design related documents for compliance with City of Berkeley standards and regulations including all applicable local, state, and federal codes and guidelines; evaluate and recommend mitigation measures to address adverse impacts of development projects; review plan checks for small developments; and review traffic control plans for construction projects.

When assigned to capital projects designs and traffic signal systems, you will have the opportunity to manage capital improvement projects including development of conceptual design options, detailed engineering design, bid, and construction administration; prepare council reports, conduct presentations, and respond to project-related public inquiries; design/review traffic engineering design elements for Complete Streets Projects and traffic calming projects; work with project development team to analyze street and road use for all road users focusing on safety and efficiency of transportation networks; and work with traffic signal maintenance team to maintain and upgrade city’s traffic signal system, including using Synchro traffic signal timing software. An ideal candidate in this role is proficient in scope, schedule, and cost management with managing multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously as well as working knowledge of complete streets design principles, traffic calming and traffic control elements, civil engineering, roadway design, and Citywide plans including Bike Plan and Pedestrian Plan.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in civil or traffic engineering and five years of increasingly responsible traffic engineering experience, three years of which were at a level equivalent to the Assistant Transportation Engineer class. Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the college course work on a year for year basis.

Other requirements include possession of a valid California Registration as a professional Traffic Engineer or a professional Civil Engineer. A CA Registration as a Traffic Engineer is preferred. Candidates must also possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. Desirable qualifications include a master's degree in Transportation Engineering/Planning or a related field.  

A Dispatcher II is a civilian employee of the Police Department who performs a variety of tasks in the Department’s Support Services Division. The Dispatcher II acts as the Department’s primary dispatcher, receiving and relaying incoming calls for emergency and non-emergency assistance; dispatching police units; operating a variety of telecommunications equipment including radio, telephone, and computer-aided dispatch systems; status monitoring, records and file maintenance in a computer-aided environment; and entry level dispatch training. A Dispatcher II may be assigned to work various hours, shifts, holidays, weekends and overtime.

Additional duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: prioritize requests for service based upon available resources, receive radio requests and handle accordingly, type, process and file a wide variety of reports and materials including memos, letters, complaints, declarations, warrants, citations, crime and traffic reports.  Assists Department personnel and the public in person and by phone performing record checks, collecting fees and mailing requested reports to outside agencies in accordance with established regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Have a combination of education and work experience, including a minimum of 1 year of dispatch work; general office work involving typing of varied materials, public contact, general filing and basic record keeping; type at least 40 wpm (net).  Have knowledge of business English, spelling; modern office practices and procedures; record keeping. Ability to dispatch police units quickly and effectively; work under pressure; exercise independent judgment; work with minimal supervision; make sound decisions in emergency situations; learn assigned clerical tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed routine; write English legibly; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; operate computer-aided dispatch system, 911 emergency telephone, and other multi-line telephone systems, various law enforcement telecommunications systems, radio console with headsets and handsets, computer keyboards, cameras, intercoms, security. Willingness to work varying shifts and radio dispatching skills.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The City of Pleasant Hill offers a competitive compensation and benefits program.

• Salary:  $6,538 to $8,468 per month. Placement within the range depends on experience and qualifications.  
• Medical Benefits: Choice of coverage with Kaiser or Blue Shield. The City pays 80% of monthly premiums at each coverage level. SELECTION PROCESS

Join the City of Berkeley's Planning and Development Department in its effort to protect the health, safety, and welfare of citizens by enforcing building codes and regulations. As a Certified Building Inspector I or II, you will perform skilled inspection work in the enforcement of building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, zoning and related codes and regulations that govern new building and housing construction, additions, alterations, repairs and use of existing buildings.   • One year of full-time experience as a building inspector with a public agency, OR

Other requirements include possession of a valid International Code Council (ICC) Commercial and Residential Building Inspector Certificate or equivalent. Equivalency shall be determined by the building official in accordance with state law. Required certifications must be maintained as a condition of employment.

LARPD is seeking a summer intern to support the Summer Youth Volunteer Program.  Applicants should have the equivalent of one year of college credits completed toward a degree.  Candidates interested in learning about recreation, volunteer management, and community services will be given preference.  Interested candidates should complete an application online. Community Outreach: Summer Youth Volunteers Project Plan 

The Community Outreach team is seeking a summer intern for a 10–12-week assignment.  The goal of the internship is to gain valuable experience managing high school aged volunteers that will support a variety of summer camps and programs throughout the district.  

Key duties 

• Be primary point of contact for Summer Youth Volunteers. 

• Assist with volunteer orientation and ongoing training sessions throughout the summer. 

• Oversee volunteer schedule. 

• Track volunteer hours logging. 

• Create program completion documents. 

• Assist with planning end of summer recognition event. 

Key deliverables will be: 

• Maintain volunteer hour tracking and create end of summer recap report. 

• Complete summer training and check-in reports. 

• Create and distribute volunteer completion certification with hours totals for all summer volunteers. 

• Report any concerns from staff and volunteers or development opportunities for volunteers through regular check-ins. 

What learning will occur for the intern? 

• Experience managing volunteers. 

• Learn how summer programs work/run in a special district.  

• Gain familiarity with volunteer management software. 

• Graphic design creating infographics and end-of-summer reports.

Timing 

June-August 9th.  Interns may start and end later but need to be present for the core Sessions slated for the entire month of June, July and through August 9th.  

Work hours will be Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, 40 hours per week during the 12 weeks of employment.  The pay rate will be $20 per hour.  All interns will be required to successfully complete a Department of Justice fingerprint clearance and undergo a TB test as a condition of employment.

The Urban Forestry Division of the City of Fremont has two paid internships available for immediate hiring.  Through a variety of tasks and duties, interns will gain well-rounded, first-hand work experience and observational knowledge in the fields of urban forestry management and municipal administration.

The Role

The role consists of assisting city staff in the preservation, maintenance, and sustainable growth of Fremont’s urban forest. Examples of division responsibilities include program administration, tree assessment, community outreach and education, grant management, data collection and analysis, contracts and vendor management, project management, as well as other related responsibilities.

Examples of duties that may be assigned to interns include processing data through the city’s GIS- based tree data management system, reviewing and processing permit applications, developing and supervising tree planting initiatives, conducting public outreach and education, providing technical expertise, completing field work and assessments, Urban Forestry Management Plan implementation, and other duties as assigned.

With assistance from city staff and resources, this role will be expected to achieve International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) arborist certification before the term ends.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Public Safety Dispatcher II in the Police Department! In this role, you will perform professional public safety dispatching work including receiving 911 system calls, dispatching assignments, and maintaining records. 

You will use a variety of public safety telephone and radio communications to obtain essential information from reporting parties, respond to inquiries, and determine and dispatch appropriate police and/or fire resources.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:
Equivalent to graduation from high school AND training or experience as specified below:

• Successful completion of the City's Public Safety Dispatcher Training Program, OR
• The equivalent of two (2) years full-time experience working independently in emergency services or communications with computer use and/or two-way radio operations with a consolidated public safety agency (dispatching police and fire), OR
• The equivalent of three (3) years full-time experience working independently in emergency services or communications with computer use and/or two-way radio operations with a non-consolidated public safety agency and possession of a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Dispatch certificate. 

Other requirements include:

• Possession of a typing certificate verifying the ability to accurately type a minimum of 35 net words per minute. Certification may be from an online typing test, a recognized business school, or an employment/temporary agency, and must be dated no more than twelve months prior to the date of application. Candidates may be required to take an on-site typing test as part of the selection process. 
• Must be able to pass a medical and psychiatric evaluation.
• Must be willing to work evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
