The San Jose Police Department is currently recruiting for a School Safety Supervisor position.  The School Safety Supervisor will be part of the San Jose Police Department's Support Services Division, School Safety & Education Unit. The School Safety and Education Unit provides administrative support and staffing for the Adult Crossing Guard Program for the City of San Jose. Additionally, the Unit coordinates the training and supervision of Student Safety Patrols at elementary schools located throughout the City. The unit comprises of 1 Captain, 1 Program Manager, 4 School Safety Supervisors and nearly 300 School Crossing Guards.  The work schedule for this position is a 4/10 schedule (10 hour work days/ 4 days a week).

The duties of this position include (but are not limited to) the following:

 - Supervises School Crossing Guards; including recruitment, interview of prospective candidates, training, scheduling, and discipline.

 - Administers, schedules, and coordinates the activities of the school crossing guard program, including maintenance of timesheets, mileage forms, performance evaluations, within an assigned geographical area.

 - Develops school safety patrol programs; conducts training in safety and advises on current state requirements.

 - Designs, prepares, or obtains teaching materials including films, videos, brochures, and testing materials for educational programs in pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, personal safety, and prevention of child sexual assault.

 - Works with Police Training and Traffic Operations to develop audio-visual instructional materials including slide and video presentations.

 - Prepares and gives presentations to student, parent, and teacher groups in and monitors program effectiveness.

 - Prepares and submits timecards for Crossing Guards.

 - Observes and reports on unsafe physical conditions of streets, roads, signs, crosswalks, and sidewalks. Makes recommendations on adjustments to matters related to the safety of student pedestrian safety.

 - Organizes and directs special events for school-age children.

 - May perform duties of a School Crossing Guard on a relief basis, as required.

 - Maintains personnel files for School Crossing Guards.

DOT is currently recruiting up to three (3) full-time Associate Construction Inspectors (ACI) in the Infrastructure Maintenance division. Openings may be in Landscape Maintenance, Pavement Maintenance, or Street Sweeping.

Key responsibilities of Landscape Maintenance ACIs include: ensuring that contractual landscapes are maintained per industry standards and City specifications, reviewing and verifying accuracy of invoices, responding to resident requests and concerns, documenting landscape conditions and recommending alternatives which enhance the safety or beauty of landscaping.

Key responsibilities of Pavement Maintenance ACIs include: ensuring quality product and workmanship for paving and ADA ramp projects, inspecting pavement resurfacing and sealing projects, validating work of contractors in the field, maintaining daily inspection logs, reviewing and verifying accuracy of invoices, cataloging right-of-way infrastructure, measuring and recording areas of failed pavement, enforcing roadway construction traffic safety standards, and mitigating conflicts with residents, businesses and contractors.

Key responsibilities of Street Sweeping ACIs include: ensuring that city streets are swept to established standards, assuring contract compliance, documenting street conditions, coordinating activities with the Parking and Traffic Control Office, and offering solutions for street maintenance which may enhance the safety or beautify streets. 

All ACIs support the development and review of maintenance specifications. In addition, all ACIs are responsible for clear documentation in daily logs, daily reports, and other forms that support accurate records of work performed. ACIs may provide direction to entry level Engineering Technicians and other assigned personnel, as well as direct the activities of City contractors.

The Department of Transportation is seeking a seasoned construction professional for the Senior Construction Inspector (SCI) position in the Pavement & ADA Inspection section. Under the supervision of a Principal Construction Inspector (PCI), this person will lead a small team of Associate Construction Inspectors (ACIs) and collaborate with engineers in the development and delivery of pavement maintenance and rehabilitation projects throughout the City in accordance with City standard plans and specifications. The SCI will manage contracts, track work progress, and interact with contractors, engineering staff, and members of the public. SCIs are responsible for clear documentation in daily logs, daily reports, and other forms that support accurate records of work performed.

Additionally, all SCIs support the development and review of maintenance specifications, as well as other programs in the Department of Transportation. The SCI is a supervisory position and will oversee the activities of Associate Construction Inspectors.

What You’ll Do

The Pump Station Mechanic III performs highly skilled work in the installation maintenance and repair of pumps, motors, chain drives, valves and related equipment, and other work as assigned.  This individual exercises lead supervision over other Pump Mechanics, including provision of technical supervision, assignment of work, and/or the training of less experienced mechanics.

THE POSITION

Under general supervision, provides a variety of moderate to difficult clerical support services to the Public Works Department.  This is a Full Time position (9/80 schedule: Monday-Friday with every other Friday off).

This is the journey level class of the Administrative Support Specialist series, fully com­petent to independently perform a variety of office support duties. All positions are charac­terized by the presence of guidelines from which to make decisions and the availability of su­pervision in non-routine circumstances. Specific duties will vary with the departmental as­signment, but all positions require incumbents to prepare reports, documents, and correspon­dence using a variety of word processing, spreadsheet, and publishing software applications. You may be assigned to do work on committees or special projects. THE WATER QUALITY CONTROL PLANT:

The Water Quality Control Plant (WQCP) processes wastewater discharge for the cities of South San Francisco, San Bruno and the Town of Colma.  The Water Quality Control Plant is a division of the Public Works Department staffed by 38 employees including: Plant Superintendent and Assistant Plant Superintendent of WQCP; Maintenance, Laboratory and Environment Compliance Supervisors; Senior Chemist; Chemist; Lead Plant Mechanics; Plant Mechanics; Lead Plant Operators; Plant Operators; Electricians; Senior Environmental Compliance Inspector; Environmental Compliance Inspectors, Utility Workers, and two Administrative Assistants.

THE POSITION:

Depending on the certification level of eligible candidates, the position may be filled as a Plant Operator I or Plant Operator II.

Operator I - this class represents the entry level for the Plant Operator series where incumbents may be assigned increasingly responsible duties with the expectation of eventually promoting to the journey level class of Plant Operator II. This class is distinguished from the Plant Operator II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions. Since the class is typically used as a training class, employees may have limited or no directly related work experience.

Operator II - this class is a journey level within the Plant Operator series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Plant Operator I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned. Positions assigned to this class are required to have complete working knowledge of water quality control plant operations and are expected to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

SELECTION PROCESS:

The process will first consist of a review of application material. A resume may be included but does not substitute for a completed application. A fully completed application (do not put “see resume”) and supplemental questionnaire are required to be considered for this position. The highly suitable and qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the next selection process of an oral interview panel (weighted at 100%) tentatively scheduled for March 28, 2019. Possession of minimal qualifications does not guarantee advancement in the selection process and placement on the eligible employment list. The eligible list will be used for the appointment of the position. Top scoring candidates will be invited to the next phase of the selection process which is a departmental interview.
