Under general supervision, the new team member will perform sub-professional engineering work involving manual and computer drafting, traffic data gathering, records management, map interpretation and processing, retrieval of information, assist with field surveys, and to do related work as required. This position will assist the Department of Public Works, Engineering Division.

This is a part-time, at-will, non-benefited position. Hours are limited to less than 1,000 hours per year.

The County of San Mateo Department of Public Works is looking for up to 2 summer interns to perform a variety of administrative and technical functions in the Engineering and Resource Protection Division. Interns will gain on-the-job experience under the guidance of experienced professional engineers, Public Works Technicians, and surveyors while participating in various activities in the assigned discipline.
College students in Associate, Undergraduate and Graduate Degree programs studying the following are encouraged to apply:

Examples Of Duties

• Scan, review, and file documents.
• Prepare letters, forms, spreadsheets, and database.
• Evaluate Division web pages and make recommendations for improvements.
• Aid in design tasks under supervision, such as drafting plans, specifications, utility letters, and creating models.
• Assist with field inspections to assess construction progress and current site conditions.
• Collect, enter, and analyze project-related data.
• Prepare reports, flyers, and presentations summarizing findings and observations.
• Support permitting processes by gathering documentation and liaising with regulatory agencies.
• Assist with inspections during the construction phase by reviewing plans and responding to RFIs, preparing CCO’s and construction related correspondences.
• Maintain organized records of project documents and correspondence.
• Conduct research on industry best practices and emerging technologies.
• Collaborate with project team members to ensure alignment with project goals.
• Attend training sessions and workshops for professional development.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and protocols at all times.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Education: At the time of submitting application, you must be enrolled in an accredited university or a community college.  

• Must be eligible to work in the United States
• Must be 18 years of age or older
• Must possess a high school diploma or educational equivalent
• Must successfully pass a thorough background investigation prior to employment
• Must be returning to your associate, undergraduate or graduate program or entering/continuing a graduate program in Fall, 2024

This Internship is offered as part of a Regional Internship Partnership to introduce and encourage current students and new graduates to local municipal governments. Job Description:  

The intern will work in the Public Works/Engineering Department and will be assisting engineering project managers with general clerical, administrative, field work, and technical tasks for public works projects.  Tasks may include electronic document filing, checking mathematical calculations, creating spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel, preparing presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint, entering data and creating reports in various software applications, performing field data collection or investigation, construction management, internet research, creating map displays using Auto CAD, Google Maps/Earth, compiling and organizing data or documents.  The intern may also assist in other areas such as internal and external Department communication and public outreach.

HONORARY DEAN ALLISON INTERNSHIP

The City of San Rafael Public Works Department (DPW) is seeking an individual to join the team as part of the Honorary Dean Allison Internship program. This position will work part-time (up to 4 days/30 hours per week) with department staff on special projects and move forward the mission of San Rafael to support the community members we serve. 

The Honorary Dean Allison Internship was created to honor Dean Allison, the City’s Public Works Director from September 2015 to March 2016, before his untimely passing. In his brief time with the City, he embraced and embodied the ideals of public service and transparency. Dean focused on the needs of the public and worked effectively with individuals and groups throughout San Rafael to respond decisively to a broad spectrum of needs both large and small in a creative and community focused way. The namesake internship celebrates his life and his time serving the citizens of San Rafael.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Honorary Dean Allison Internship may include:

• Assisting staff to develop and implement the City’s sidewalk maintenance program.
• Drafting, iterating, and designing policy to introduce the City’s tree ordinance, urban forestry initiative, and the City’s public asset inventory project 
• Assisting with the permitting, sediment, reporting and regulatory compliance in support of the City’s Dredging project.
• Designing content and materials for public dissemination and outreach regarding City projects, maintenance activities, and public safety information.
• Preparing written reports on DPW program activities.
• Creating, updating and auditing project financial spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel.
• Conducting research and analysis of federal, state and local laws related to DPW engineering projects.
• Compiling information, preparing documents and public education materials for community members and stakeholders on DPW projects.
• Participating in city-wide projects in which DPW public works programs and activities.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Graduated or currently enrolled in the 3rd year of a Bachelor’s degree program or higher in an Engineering, Business, Public Administration, Environmental Science, or related program.
• Ability to multitask and stay organized.
• Proficient computer efficiency, including familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Ability to demonstrate characteristics of listening, flexibility, follow-through, problem solving, community-orientation, and identifying “win-win” solutions.

The City of Foster City has an opening for a Engineering Intern in the Public Works Department. The position is part-time with flexible scheduling, up to 980 hours per fiscal year, and no benefits provided. The department is interested in candidates for the summer or candidates who can start as soon as possible.  

Important and Essential Responsibilities: 
Daily responsibilities will include works directly with the Public Works staff, populating the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database, and performing indexing and data entry. Other duties may include providing project assistance to technical and engineering staff related to capital improvement projects, researching, CAD drafting, plan review, data collection and analysis, permit issuance, and compiling information from various sources, and providing administrative or other support in the Public Works Department. 

Education and Training Guidelines: 
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be:

• Education: Graduation from high school. A degree or degree in progress in Engineering program in a school or university is required.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The Parks and Recreation Department is composed of a Director and 22 full-time management positions. The department is comprised of the Recreation, Parks, and Building Maintenance divisions. The Building Maintenance Division maintains 32 facilities totaling more than 563,000 square feet and over 275 acres of park land. The Position

The Veterinary Technician will assist in the care of animal patients at the City’s animal shelter. The Veterinary Technician reports to the Animal Services Manager and assists the veterinarian, animal services officers and administrative team and is responsible for quality humane treatment of all animals in the care of the Tri-City Animal Shelter. This is an excellent leadership opportunity to provide high quality care for animal patients. The part-time Veterinary Technician will be working 20 hours per week.
