Senior Park Utility Worker: Tree Maintenance

The City of Sunnyvale is recruiting for one Senior Park Utility Worker: Tree Maintenance in the Department of Public Works.  This position will lead a small crew (2 to 4 person crew), where the incumbent performs the work duties assigned as well as directs and oversees the work of the crew members.

Under general supervision, leads and performs journey-level landscape maintenance tasks and does related work, as required.

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

High school diploma or GED equivalent, AND Four years of related tree maintenance experience, some of which shall have been at a level equivalent to Utility Worker or Maintenance Worker II with the City of Sunnyvale.

Required Licenses

Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class B California driver's license and a safe driving record is required.

Salary:  $38.08 - $48.60 Hourly

About the Position:  This position requires the ability to maintain a high level of accuracy, integrity, and confidentiality.

The Accounting Technician performs a variety of routine to complex administrative and technical duties related to payroll and other accounting support duties. Top candidates have experience working with financial systems, with the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technology and information systems.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• accounts receivable/payable,
• review, post, balance, reconcile, and maintain accurate and confidential accounting and payroll records,
• verify, post, and record a variety of financial transactions; prepare and maintain databases,
• maintain a variety of ledgers, registers, and journals according to established accounting policies and procedures; reconcile transactions and account statements; record changes and resolve differences; maintain the accuracy of accounting and financial records,
• report generation,
• produce journal entries to post payments to the general ledger,
• accurately prepare employee and vendor payments for retirement and other benefits; submits reportable compensation to CalPERS and process payments; prepare Federal and State tax reports.

Education and Experience:  any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: 

• equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by college-level coursework in accounting or finance, and

Salary: $50.94 - $65.01 Hourly

DEFINITION:

Under general direction, manages and directs the Accounting Division of the Finance Department, including the budget development process and preparation of the budget book; budget monitoring, analysis and reporting; short- and long-range fiscal forecasting; ensuring adherence to financial policies and procedures; and capital planning.  The Accounting Manager trains and evaluates assigned staff.

CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:

This is a single position classification at the managerial level in the Finance Department responsible for managing the budget and accounting functions. The Accounting Manager has a broad range of independence within policy and procedural limitations and works under minimal supervision. The incumbent is accountable to the Finance Director for the quality and efficiency of services directed.  The Accounting Manager is expected to provide resources, system support, and oversight to all subordinate professional and paraprofessional staff. This position is responsible for the successful planning and implementation of the citywide budget process and the day-to-day accounting operations.  

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (illustrative only):

• Plan, organize, direct and evaluate the activities of the Accounting Division including general accounting, accounts payable and payroll.
• Recommend the appointment of personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; conduct performance evaluations; work with employees on performance issues; and implement disciplinary procedures.
• Prepare, review and maintain journal entries and general ledger postings and supporting financial records and supervise the maintenance of the General Ledger.           

• Conduct and coordinate the annual audit and serve as the liaison between the City and the external auditors, provide requested information and necessary documentation for completion of the audit, and ensure timely completion of the audit, State Controller’s Office reports and other compliance reports as required.
• Oversee reconciliations of the City’s financial activities including bank accounts and investments, month-end and year-end close processes and prepare related reports.
• Plan and implement citywide budget process and related fiscal programs.
• Effectively communicate budget preparation calendar and information needs, capabilities, and limitations as well as budget policies, procedures and outcomes to departments, city officials, citizens, and other interested parties.
• Project citywide personnel costs on an annual basis and as needed.
• Monitor the City’s budget, perform budget analysis, prepare quarterly budget status reports, develop financial and capital plans, and prepare short- and long-range financial forecasts.
• Research and implement new budget initiatives that increase the usefulness and clarity of budget presentations and maximize staff efficiency.
• Conduct a variety of special studies; prepare and present various analyses, statistical compilations, and reports to City staff, City Council, or the public.
• Assist in the management of the City’s capital financing programs, including debt issuance.
• Facilitate development and implementation of improved processes and standard procedures.
• Participate in the development and implementation of Department goals, policies, and priorities.
• Assist in operational administration of risk management activities as assigned.

DESCRIPTION:

The Department:

The Parks and Recreation Department provides planning, development, operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of the City's neighborhood parks, open space, water sites, recreation buildings, and trails.

The Position:

Under supervision, to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in connection with the development and maintenance of City parks and recreational facilities.

As an As-needed Laborer, the successful incumbent will work in the department, performing routine maintenance on various parks and facilities including the city-owned cemetery. This position will assist in maintenance and repair using a variety of tools and specialized equipment. 

The Laborer position performs varied, unskilled and skilled manual tasks related to landscape maintenance and sanitization. Typical tasks include cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and buildings, loading trash and leaves in truck, litter abatement, mowing, edging, cleaning park sites, graffiti abatement, and operating a variety of hand/power tools and heavy equipment as needed. This position may require working weekends, holidays, and after hours. Must be able to read, speak, and write English at a basic level, follow written and oral instruction, and perform heavy lifting.  

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

Performs construction, maintenance and sanitation duties as required; and does related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education Requirements:

Sufficient education to provide the ability to read, write and speak English at a basic level.

No experience is required.

License/Certifications:

Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license is required.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Landscape maintenance experience.
• Experience working with the public in a service environment.

Other Requirements:

Ability to work odd and irregular hours including weekends and holidays.

Some knowledge of: the purposes, use, and maintenance of simple hand tools; construction and maintenance methods and materials. Good ability to: learn to use simple hand tools; follow oral and written instructions; and perform heavy physical labor.

The Park Maintenance Worker I performs routine maintenance and repair work in the care of parks, recreation areas and equipment. The selected candidate will be part of a work crew assigned to a daily work detail.

All Assignments

• Responsible for vehicle and pedestrian traffic safety in work area.
• Manually transports heavy objects, supplies and materials.

Trees Assignment

• Prunes and trims designated street trees to shape and improve growth.
